1) Introduction
---------------

My thanks to Tasc B.V., Mart Tarmak, Jaan Narva, Brian Stephenson,
Adriano Rodrigues, Chern Seng Pau, Anjo Anjewierden, Martin Pribyl,
Bosko Grove, Arthur Pomeroy, Ian Murray, Peter Ballard and
Michael Niermann.

An interesting range of events this week with the annual Hoogovens
event (full games are available from TASC throughout the week) and
from a speed event in Tallinn Estonia. This week has been a catching
up process with a final bunch of games from Groningen and the Hastings
Challengers. One event I haven't caught up with is the last round
of last years US Championships, does anyone have the games?

Apologies about my www page which for some reason appears to be
unavailable (as are all Bradford pages) over the weekend. There
is no direct reason for this so I hope that the problem can
be resolved. It usually becomes available directly upon the
arrival of the computer staff on Monday mornings.

I hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) PCA lose INTEL as a sponsor.
--------------------------------

It has been reported that INTEL will not renew their sponsorship
with the PCA. Whether this marks the end of their chess sponsorship
or simply the end of their association with the PCA is unclear.

INTEL have been reported to be happy with the amount of exposure
they have had, I hope this is the case. It is sad that they
entered at a time when the chess World has been in chaos due to
the intransgence and incompetence of those at the top of the game.
Would that they had been around to sponsor the GMA ....
It had been said to me that INTEL Europe were marginally in
favour of renewal and that INTEL USA were marginally against.
A decisive factor may have been Gary Kasparov's decision to
play a match against INTEL's DEEP BLUE in February. This and
the changes at the top of FIDE which have made it very unlikely
that there will be a deal soon on any "reunification" of the
title. I don't see any reason why INTEL can't organise their
own events if they ever have any future interest in chess.

The FIDE President has proposed a knockout World Championship
to decide the World Champion. This event is to be held every
year. The somehow believe that $5m can be raised each year
as sponsorship, I would respectfully suggest that this is
a joke. A return to the Zonal, Interzonal, Candidates Tournament
and World Championship is I think a priority, I believe that
this is a sustainable cycle over two years. But FIDE first
need to convince us that they are back on track, we will have
to wait for the next meeting for that.

Hoogovens A Tournament
-----------------------

The A event started off in an extremely dull way. I feared that
it was just going to be one of those GM tournaments where the
event never quite takes off. However this seemed to start to
change in round 3 with Anand, Ivanchuk and Piket winning. Rounds 5
and 6 contained some very bloodthirsty (although probably inaccurate
chess.) Anand seems to be hitting top form, he played imaginatively
against Sokolov but missed his winning chances and lost, but he
won both in rounds 6 and in round 7 (still continuing as I write.)

Ivan Sokolov lost a very, very odd game against Vassily Ivanchuk
in round 6.

4) Paul Keres Rapid Chess Memorial Tallinn-1996 by Mart Tarmak and Jaan Narva.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tallinn 6-7.01.1996 25+25 minutes Rapidplay.

Jaan Narva has compiled the games from the Keres and corrects
the scores which I reported last week (one too many points for
each player)

Mart Tarmak also says that there will be a Keres Memorial in Pdrnu
in February (Ehlvest, Oll, Short, I. Sokolov, Hracek, Khalifman -
XVII category).

He also talks about an event which is in the planning stages but
looks certain to go ahead at the end of February or the beginning
of March.

"It is to show a little the "laboratory" of correspondence chess player
to the audience. GM Ehlvest
agreed to play simultaneously against the best Estonian correspondence chess
players who are allowed to use all that they normally do (books, second
board for analyse, computer, other chess-players). Ehlvest has 2,5 hours for
four games, the correspondence players for the whole game. Of course, both
sides are reduced in thinking but anyway I think it will be very interesting
match. Also it seems that it is the first such a kind event ever. (Of course
grandmasters have played consultation games but it is different). Already
agreed to play our correspondence chess world champion Iym, Tonu and
hopefully Jaan Merilo who has the highest ICCF rating (2600) among Estonian
players will also join. The Board of Estonian Chess Federation (I am also
member of this body) approved the idea and the main organizer will be
Hendrik Olde (he made the book of all Paul Keres' games). We would like to
inform the chess world beforehand because we hope that the event will have
broader than only all-Estonian interest." [Mart Tarmak]

My thanks to Anjo Anjewierden for his coverage of both Groningen events
over Christmas. In the games section are some of the games from the
final round of the open.

7) Lazne Bohdanec 1996 by Martin Pribyl
-----------------------------------------

Two GM norms from Ekorex Cup in Lazne Bohdanec is two novelty from the Czech
Republic. Young Polish IM Marcin Kaminski scored 7.5 pts and together with the
rising star Sergei Movsesian (nowadays playing for Armenia, lives for two
years in the Czech Republic) achieved GM norms.
Vlastimil Babula, Czech player nr. 2, did not win the last round with Jan
Votava and could not score his last GM norm. Babula started 0/2 and in the
next rounds nobody could stop him.

In the second IM tournament achieved Mikulas Manik (Slovakia) and Artur
Jakubiec (Poland) two IM norms.

11) 103rd NEW ZEALAND CHESS CONGRESS by Arthur Pomeroy
------------------------------------------------------

Arthur J. Pomeroy (turo1953@kauri.vuw.ac.nz)

The 103rd consecutive New Zealand Chess Congress was held at the Wellington
Airport Hotel, Wellington, 28 December to 11 January 1996.

Championship
------------

The Championship event was expected to be a contest between Russell Dive
(returned from Europe with his IM title and a 2430 rating), Anthony Ker,
and Paul Garbett -- in the event, Dive had to share the title with Martin
Dreyer and Bob Smith. Russell ruefully noted that having White against the
bottom two qualifiers virtually gave him 6 Blacks and 3 Whites for the
tournament!

The Reserve Championship was a close contest between the top three players.
Going in to the last round, Nigel Metge and Peter Hawkes were tied on 7.5,
with Matthew Barlow a half point back; Metge won quickly, but Hawkes was
lucky to draw with Arthur Pomeroy and was caught by Barlow.

13) Michael Niermann's Chess Tournament Calendar
------------------------------------------------

This calendar is available at

HREF=http://www.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de/lsvi/niermann/calendar.html

Information about events should be sent to him at niermann@math.uni-dortmund.de
rather than me (Mark Crowther).

You'll find detailed information on some of the tournaments listed in the
chronological calendar. Many thanks to all who have sent us some tournament
informations, but we still need some help. If you want to support us, please
send infos about tournaments in your country to niermann@math.uni-dortmund.de.
Comments are also welcome (e.g. wrong links in the calendar).

To the organizers of tournaments: It would be much easier for me, if you could
send me in addition to the announcement a short description in the format
below. If you give an email, ftp, telnet or WWW address, it would also be nice
to include a link in HTML format, if you are able to do so.
