1) Introduction
---------------

A rather thin issue of The Week in Chess is due to two factors.
Firstly a large amount of work on 3 tournaments will have to
be held over until I can compare the details of the events with
the official tournament tables. Hopefully these events will
be available next week. Secondly processing, E-Mail and www access
have been severely limited to me this weekend due to systems
problems at Bradford University and to bad weather here also.
The main event this week was the Hoogovens Wijk aan Zee tournament.
After a slow start this event more than lived up to expectations and saw
another victory for "Crown Prince" Vassily Ivanchuk.

My thanks to TASC Jonathan Tisdall, Bob Wade, Brian Stephenson, Sam Sloan
Larry Bevand and Fillippo for their help with this issue.

2) Tournaments in Wijk aan Zee
------------------------------

My thanks to TASC for their excellent coverage during this
tournament. I'll try and get some comments together for the
next issue on this excellent event.

4) Four Nations Chess League
-------------------------

The Four Nations Chess League continued last weekend. Britain
unlike Germany, France, Spain etc had no league until Chris
Dunworth floated the idea three years ago. The event continues
to be well supported by players based in this country.

Rounds 3 and 4 were held in Abergovenny in Wales over the weekend
20 - 21 Jan 1996. This left only Whitney on 100%.

5) Review: Hastings Centenary International Chess Congress 1995-6 Bulletin
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Those who have read TWIC's over the Christmas period will
be aware that Brian Stephenson sent the games from the
Hastings Premier and some of the games from the Challengers.
Now the printed bulletin is available. My last encounter
with a tournament bulletin was for the Lloyds Bank of 1993
and that managed to arrive several months later as a few
A4 sheets stapled together. This is quite a different production
and some care has been taken to make the bulletin both look the part
and be a good read.

One Premier game per round (at least) has been annotated by
IM Colin Crouch and there is a little background information at the
start of every round. The notes are a nice mix of verbal and
variations. There are 225 games altogether including all the
games from the Premier (45)

A similar approach is followed with the Challengers. The results
appear in full and there is a nice selection of games, a few
annotated. The indexing is full. 52 pages A5 booklet with green
cover.

A genuinely worthwhile bulletin covering this year's centenary
congress.

The bulletin is produced by Brian's company Watherthorpe Information
services Limited (with help from Chess Assistant 1.4 and Monica Vann)
it costs 7 pounds + postage from: 9 Roydfield Drive, Watherthorpe,

6) THE MECHANICS INSTITUTE PRESENTS THE 1996 CHARLES LINKLATER MEMORIAL
--------------------------------------------------------------------

by Sam Sloan, with assistance from Tom Dorsch

Rounds 1-3 of the California State Championship tournament were played on
January 13-15, 1996 in conjunction with the CalChess Season Opener tournament
in Foster City. Final rounds will be played at the Mechanics Institute in San
Francisco. The tournament is directed by distinguished International Arbiter
Mike Goodall. Tournament bulletins are by Tom Dorsch.

Invitations were issued to the top masters in Northern California in rating
order. Acceptances were received from John Donaldson, Omar Cartagena, Jeremy
Silman, Craig Mar, Ronald Cusi, Burt Izumikawa, Ignacio Marin, and Paul
Koploy.

After three rounds, and a fine start, John Donaldson received word that his
mother was gravely ill in Philadelphia. He was obliged to withdraw.

This proved to be an exceptionally lucky break for Omar Cartagena, who had
lost to Donaldson. Cartagena took full advantage of the opportunity thus
presented by winning all the rest of his games! Cartagena now leads the
tournament with the incredible score of 4-0. (Incredible considering the
strength of the opposition of this category 6 tournament.)

Of the six players with a FIDE rating remaining in the tournament, the
average rating is 2379 (on the new list). However, Ignacio Marin of Spain,
although rated over 2400 by the USCF, apparently does not have a FIDE rating.
Does any body know how this affects the category of the tournament? Another
related question is: Let's assume that Cartagena wins all the rest of his
games. This will make his actual result as 6-1, since he lost to Donaldson,
who withdrew. Is there any way that Cartagena can make an International
Master's norm out of this, or must he play nine games against rated players?

I suspect that the answer is that norms were never available in this
tournament, because there were only seven games, even before Donaldson
withdrew.

Thanks to Tom Dorsch for supplying the games of the first three rounds of
this tournament.

7) 1996 Canadian Youth Chess Festival by Larry Bevand
--------------------------------------------------

January 20, 1996

1996 CANADIAN YOUTH CHESS FESTIVAL

Organized & sponsored by the Chess'n Math Association - Canada's
National Scholastic Chess Organization.

The Chess'n Math Association will have its own homepage on the WWW
sometime in February. In the meantime, please visit the Saskatchewan Chess
Association homepage for a complete posting of the rules of the event. They
will also be posting these results shortly.

The 1996 Canadian Youth Championship got underway this morning in
Montreal, Quebec. Typical Canadian winter weather made travelling yesterday
a little crazy as we saw the temperature drop from 10 degrees celcius to -12
in the space of 8 hours. Add to that the fact that we had lots of rain which
turned into
snow. I'll let your imagination take care of the rest of this story. The
last fellow to arrive was Garrett Chin of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He was
scheduled to come in at midnight but his flight was delayed and finally
arrived at 2 a.m. The longest delay was for our folks from Prince Edward
Island who came in 8 hours later than scheduled.
Anyway, the bottom line is that everyone arrived safely and the round
started on time at 9:15 a.m...

ROUND 1 - UNDER 10 YEARS OLD

Michael Buscar (ON) 0 - 1 Nikhil Joshi (NF)
Igor Dviljan (ON) 1 - 0 Scott Landry (PE)
Tristan Ledent (QC) 1 - 0 Jonathan Percowitz (QC)
Albert Kashap (SK) 0 - 1 Sean Walker (MB)
Max Miller (BC) 1 - 0 Nigel Sharp (AB)

Definitions: Letters in brackets indicate Canadian provinces.

ON - ONTARIO, QC - QUEBEC, BC - BRITISH COLUMBIA, AB - ALBERETA, SK -
SASKATCHEWAN, MB - MANITOBA, PE - PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, NB - NEW BRUNSWICK,
NF - NEWFOUNDLAND

The pre-tournament favorites in this group are Michael Buscar and Igor
Dviljan. Michael played in the U.S. School grade last month where he won a
trophy in his grade. Igor has only been in Canada since April 1995. Canadian
rules state that a player can represent the country internationally if he
has been living in Canada a minimum of 6 months before the first
qualification tournament for the event. The first qualifier was in November
1995 which means he made it just under the wire. He is from the former
Yuguslavia.
The youngest player in this group is Nigel Sharp - 5 years old! He has a
scholastic rating of 800! Both his parents are reasonably good chessplayers...

ROUND 2 - UNDER 10 YEARS OLD

Michael Buscar (ON) 0 - 1 Sean Walker (MB)

Marc-A. Laframboise(QC) 1 - 0 Gerard O'Reilly (AB)

Stephen Glinert should have no problem winning this section. Rated well
above the rest of the field he just has to be carefull not to get
overconfident...

ROUND 2 - UNDER 12 YEARS OLD

Stephen Glinert (ON) 1 - 0 Marc-Andre Laframboise (QC)

ROUND 1 - UNDER 14 YEARS OLD

Pascal Charbonneau (QC) 1 - 0 Anand Joshi (NF)
Douglas Wu (AB) 1 - 0 Brian Berscheid (SK)

Andrew Ho represented Canada in the under 12 World Youth in Brazil last
October. He placed 5th! This young talented master from B.C. is a name you
will be hearing often in the future. Lefong Hua and Roman Golts will
certainly make him work for his place this year as these talented experts
are capable of knocking off anyone when they are hot.

ROUND 2 - UNDER 14 YEARS OLD

Andrew Ho (BC) 1 - 0 Pascal Charbonneau (QC)
Lefong Hua (QC) 1 - 0 Roman Golts (ON)

ROUND 1 - UNDER 18 YEARS OLD

Meng Lou (ON) 1 - 0 Charles Filion (QC)
Eugene Cormos (QC .5-.5 David Boulay (QC)
Igor Zugic (ON) 1 - 0 Justin Gulati (PE)
Chris Chu (ON) .5-.5 Garrett Chin (SK)
Alfred Pechisker (BC) 1 - 0 Ed Martin (NF)
Peter Marshall (ON) 1 - 0 Gurb Singh (AB)

Meng Lou is the favorite here. Lou represnted Canada in the under 14
competition in December and was playing for fifth place going into the last
round. Unfortunately a loss put him back to around 12th spot. Lou finished
second at the Canadian Junior a few weeks ago. Cormos represented Canada in
the under 14 championship last October where he scored 50%. Since then,
however, he played in the Canadian Junior where he placed third. His CFC
rating is up to 2179 these days while Lou is a master.
I heard some crying from B.C. about the number of players from Ontario &
Quebec in this section. For the record, this is what happened. The number of
players was suppose to be 10 but because the provincial qualifiers were
being held at the same time as the World Youths, it was decided to seed our
two World Youth representatives (Anthony Castillo (QC)& Meng Lou (ON))
directly to the Nationals). So far it makes sense. A couple of weeks before
the start of the Nationals, the Manitoba representative dropped out. Fine,
it was decided that the highest rated Quebec player would replace the
Manitoba player since last minute airfare from Manitoba to Quebec would have
cost a fortune. Four days before the start of the Nationals, Castillo called
to say that he could not play because of too much school work. It was
decided to replace Castillo with the highest rated Ontario player who turned
out to be Peter Marshal - an expert from Ottawa. Ottawa is less than a 2
hour drive from Montreal. Obviously if we had known that both Castillo & the
Manitoba player were going to withdraw, this would simply have become a
10-player section. However, once we had invited the Quebec player to replace
the Manitoba player, it would not have been correct to then call him back
and ask him to stay home. You may not agree with our decisions but at least
now you know exactly what took place.

ROUND 2 - UNDER 18 YEARS OLD

Meng Lou (ON) 1 - 0 Alfred Pechisker (BC)
Eugene Cormos (QC .5-.5 Garrett Chin (SK)
Igor Zugic (ON) .5-.5 Peter Marshall (ON)
Chris Chu (ON) 1 - 0 David Boulay (QC)
Charles Filion (QC) 1 - 0 Ed Martin (NF)
Justin Gulati (PE) 1 - 0 Gurb Singh (AB)

ROUND 3 - UNDER 18 YEARS OLD

Meng Lou (ON) 0 - 1 Igor Zugic (ON)
Eugene Cormos (QC) 0 - 1 Charles Filion (QC)
Chris Chu (ON) 0 - 1 Peter Marshall (ON)
Alfred Pechisker (BC) 1 - 0 Justin Gulati (PE)
David Boulay (QC) 1 - 0 Garrett Chin (SK)
Ed Martin (NF) 1 - 0 Gurb Singh (AB)

Some upsets in this round which turn this section into a race. Igor
Zugic defeated Meng Lou and Cormos gave up an important point to Charles Filion.

FINAL REPORT - 1996 CANADIAN YOUTH CHESS FESTIVAL

Organized & sponsored by the Chess'n Math Association - Canada's National
Scholastic Chess Organization.

The Chess'n Math Association will have its own homepage on the WWW
sometime in February. In the meantime, please visit the Saskatchewan Chess
Association homepage for a complete posting of the rules of the event. They
will also be posting these results shortly.

I got some e-mail back from you folks which I appreciate immensely. First
some quick unrelated news, Phil Haley tells us that Intel is no longer
supporting the PCA according to a posting on Compuserve by Carol Jarecki.
Len Steele informs us that The Alberta Chess Federation has won an award for
their homepage on the Internet. Congratulations guys! I suggest you check
out their site.

Jerome Bibuld has generously offered to make a financial contribution to
our Canadian Youth Chess Festival which I apprecfiate greatly but will
decline for now. However, I will contact you before next year's event! Vojin
Vujosevic has kindly pointed out that I have been spelling one of the names
wrong. When I looked at the crosstable I have, I realized the only person to
blame was myself. Gee life is tough sometimes! Thanks Vojin, I need this to
remind myself that I also am human.

Ontario dominated at the Canadian Youth Chess Festival this year, winning
3 of the 4 categories. Here are the results of the last two rounds played
earlier today:

ROUND 4 - UNDER 10 YEARS OLD

Michael Buscar (ON) .5-.5 Tristan Ledent (QC)
Igor Divljan (ON) 1 - 0 Sean Walker (MB)
Albert Kashap (SK) 0 - 1 Scott Landry (PE)
Max Miller (BC) 1 - 0 Nikhil Joshi (NF)
Jonathan Perecowicz (QC)1 - 0 Nigel Sharp (AB)

ROUND 5 - UNDER 10 YEARS OLD

Michael Buscar (ON) .5-.5 Nigel Sharp (AB)
Igor Divljan (ON) 0 - 1 Nikhil Joshi (NF)
Tristan Ledent (QC) 1 - 0 Sean Walker (MB)
Albert Kashap (SK) 0 - 1 Max Miller (BC)
Scott Landry (PE) 1 - 0 Jonathan Perecowitz (QC)

FINAL STANDINGS - UNDER 10 YEARS OLD

1st - Igor Divljan 4 points This was the name I spelled wrong last
time..
2nd - Tristan Ledent 3.5
3rd - Nikhil Joshi 3
4th - Max Miller 3
5th - Scott Landry 3
5th - Sean Walker 3
7th - Michael Buscar 2
7th - Jon. Perecowitz 2
9th - Nigel Sharp 1.5
10th - Albert Kashap 0

Igor's coach, Toronto Master Goran Milicevic, told me that when Igor
plays in our scholastic events, he can show him every single one of the
games without writing them down. Last summer, Goran showed him a position
from one of Tal's games and they worked out the combination together. Six
months later, Goran gave him the same position and little Igor said "You
showed me this during the summer" and played the winning combo. How good is
he. Probably not far from expert strength...
Trophies are awarded to the top 3 in each section. When there are ties,
playoffs are organized. To determine third place, Joshi beat Walker and
Miller beat Landry. The final between Miller and Joshi was won by Joshi.

ROUND 4 - UNDER 12 YEARS OLD

Stephen Glinert (ON) 1 - 0 Victor Zambo (ON)
Kelly Huang (SK) 1 - 0 Tristan Murray (PE)

Dan Tran (QC) 1 - 0 Gerard O'Reilly (AB)
M-Andre Laframboise (QC).5-.5 Samuel Lipnowski (MB)

ROUND 5 - UNDER 12 YEARS OLD

Stephen Glinert (ON) 1 - 0 Kelly Huang (SK)
Samuel Wong (BC) 1 - 0 Samuel Lipnowski (MB)
Dan Tran (QC) 0 - 1 Tristan Murray (PE)
M-Andre Laframboise (QC)1 - 0 Victor Zambo (ON)
Espen Sodha (NF) 1 - 0 Gerard O'Reilly (AB)

FINAL STANDINGS - UNDER 12 YEARS OLD

1st - Stephen Glinert 5
2nd - Marc-Andre Laframboise 3.5
3rd - Espen Sodha 3
4th - Samuel Wong 3
5th - Samuel Lipnowski 2.5
5th - Victor Zambo 2.5
7th - Kelly Huang 2
8th - Tristan Murray 2
9th - Dan Tran 1.5
10th - Gerard O'Reilly 0

No surprise here as Stephen is head and shoulders above the rest of the
field. With a CFC rating of 2146, he should be able to perform reasonably
well at the World Youth. He represented Canada 2 years ago in the under 10
competition. It is interesting to note that Ontario came first, Quebec
second and Newfoundland third in both the under 10 and under 12 sections...

ROUND 4 - UNDER 14 YEARS OLD

Andrew Ho (BC) 1 - 0 Douglas Wu (AB)
Lefong Hua (QC) 0 - 1 Pascal Charbonneau (QC)
Roman Golts (ON) 1 - 0 Anand Joshi (NF)
Eric Bertrand (NB) 1 - 0 Brian Berscheid (SK)
Joshua Henson (MB) 1 - 0 Liat Dobrishman (ON)

ROUND 5 - UNDER 14 YEARS OLD

Andrew Ho (BC) .5-.5 Roman Golts (ON)
Lefong Hua (QC) 1 - 0 Liat Dobrishman (ON)
Pascal Charbonneau (QC) .5-.5 Douglas Wu (AB)
Eric Bertrand (NB) .5-.5 Joshua Henson (MB)
Anand Joshi (NF) 0 - 1 Brian Berscheid (SK)

FINAL STANDINGS - UNDER 14 YEARS OLD

1st - Andrew Ho 4.5
2nd - Pascal Charbonneau 3.5
3rd - Lefong Hua 3
4th - Roman Golts 3
4th - Douglas Wu 3
6th - Joshua Henson 2.5
7th - Anand Joshi 2
8th - Eric Bertrand 1.5
9th - Liat Dobrishman 1
10th - Brian Bersched 1

Again, no surprises here. This self-taught master showed that he was in a
class of his own despite the presence of 3 strong experts in the section.
Charbonneau defeated Hua to take second place. He has improved a great deal
over the last 18 months. The playoff for third saw Hua beat Wu and Golts.
Hua seems to have Golts number as he always seems to beat him by a whisker
in playoff matches...

ROUND 4 - UNDER 18 YEARS OLD

Meng Lou (ON) 1 - 0 Peter Marshall (ON)
Eugene Cormos (QC 1 - 0 Ed Martin (NF)
Igor Zugic (ON) 1 - 0 Alfred Pechisker (BC)
Chris Chu (ON) 1 - 0 Charles Filion (QC)
David Boulay (QC) .5-.5 Justin Gulati (PE)
Garrett Chin (SK) 0 - 1 Gurb Singh (AB)

ROUND 5 - UNDER 18 YEARS OLD

Meng Lou (ON) .5-.5 Eugene Cormos (QC)
Igor Zugic (ON) .5-.5 Chris Chu (ON)

Justin Gulati (PE) 1 - 0 Ed Martin (NF)

FINAL STANDINGS - UNDER 18 YEARS OLD

1st - Igor Zugic 4
2nd - Meng Lou 3.5
3rd - Peter Marshall 3.5
4th - Chris Chu 3
4th - Alfred Pechisker 3
4th - David Boulay 3
7th - Eugene Cormos 2.5
8th - Justin Gulati 2.5
9th - Charles Filion 2
10th - Garrett Chin 1
10th - Ed Martin 1
10th - Gurb Singh 1

Zugic recently finished all alone in first in his grade at the U.S.
School Grade Championship. He arrived in Canada from Yugoslavia 3 - 4 years
ago and is improving every day. He has a great attitude and I think his win
here will motivate him to work even harder. As for the people from B.C. who
were complaining about all the players from Ontario, please take note that
Ontario took the top 3 spots in this section and their 4th representative
finished in a tie for fourth! The Quebec contingent did however perform far
below our expectations.

Hope you enjoyed this report. If you have detected any errors, please
tell me about it.

Thanks
