1) Introduction

My thanks to Marko Siil, Dennis Monokroussos, Miklos Orso, Nebojsa Baralic, John Hillery, Torstein Bae, Derek Slater, Thierry Foissez, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Scott Freeman, John Saunders, Doug Bake, Stefan Loeffler, Eugenio Davolio, Arthur F Brameld, Jan Mazuch, Reinhold Goldau and everyone else who helped with the issue.

It was a rough week for the top seeds in the World Cup, especially in the 3rd round when 2nd seed Shakhriyar Mamedyarov went out in the normal time-rate games and Vassily Ivanchuk was then eliminated in the blitz (after blowing a win in the first game of the rapid too). It would have been nice to see Ivanchuk play Topalov but there are still a number of very strong players left in. However this format always will be open to random results and is inherently unsatifactory as a way of settling World Championships Candidates. I suspect we're going to be stuck with it in one way or another until the current leadership of FIDE is removed. Nevertheless a gathering of so many strong players can never be an entirely bad thing and we no doubt will have plenty more excitement this week.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

4) World Youth Chess Championships

The World Youth Chess Championships took place 17th-29th November 2007 in Antalya. Ivan Popov of Russia took the main Boys Under-18 title.

Round 10 games from the Boys under-18 event are missing (the file on the site actually has the Boys-U16 games). I made use of both the official files and also of a file of games on the ChessBase compiled by Reinhold Goldau who did a great job cleaning up the games. I've included the under18 and 16 sections for boys and girls and the U14 for boys.

5) US Chess League

The final of the US Chess League took on the 28th November 2007. Dallas beat Boston after a tie-break. Games were played on ICC. My thanks to Greg Shahade.

The rules for the tie-break were unusual: 1. The 4th boards for each team will play each other. The team that won on the highest board during the original match will choose their color for this first game. If all games are drawn, the lowest rated team gets to choose colors. The time control will be 5 minutes with a 5 second increment. The loser of this game will be eliminated and the winner will then go on to face board 3 of the opposing team. 2. This process repeats itself until all 4 players from one team have been defeated. Thus in order for your opponent to win the match, every single one of your team members must be eliminated. 3. Colors are reversed every single game. If a game ends in a draw, both players are eliminated. If one team is down to it's last player, then there will be no elimination on a draw, colors will reverse and the game will be replayed. Colors will reverse every single game under all circumstances.

Gibtelecom Chess Festival 2008

The 6th edition of Gibraltar's Gibtelecom Chess Festival will be held from 22nd-31st January 2008 at the Caleta Hotel, one of Gibraltar's best hotels. In previous years players of the quality of Alexei Shirov, Michael Adams and Nigel Short have played in the Masters section. Usually the Masters field includes at least 30 grandmasters. In 2008 the first prize in the Masters has gone up to £12,000 and the tournament is so strong at the top that it even offers a £2,000 prize for the best score by a player rated under 2600 (we think that might be unique worldwide) as well as the same amount for other rating categories down to sub-2200. There is also big money to be won in the Under 2250 (£1,500 first prize) and Under 1850 (£1,000 first prize) events. Even the relatively light-hearted evening events (which cost nothing to enter) have a combined prize fund of £1,200.

ICC and FICS client for mobile phones

Mats Luthman has written a program that connects to ICC and FICS, compatable with many modern mobile phones. I've been looking for something like this for a while for watching live tournaments if I'm out and about. Its a nice free solution, you can also play but I haven't tried that.
