2) Women's World Chess Championships Jaen Spain
------------------------------------------------

This best of 16 games match could be the last FIDE match of any
type if the current problems continue. Xie Jun took the lead
in game one with a long 60 move grind. Xie Jun has a large
team of helpers, Zsuzsa only her family, but of course one of
those is Judit Polgar!

TASC are covering the event on their www page:

http://www.tasc.nl/wwc

Danny Mozes also is covering the event on his page:

http://www.netvision.net.il/~ChessTreasure

1) Polgar, Zsuzsa - Xie Jun 0-1 60
2) Xie Jun - Polgar, Zsuzsa 1/2 17
3) Polgar, Zsuzsa - Xie Jun 1/2 19
4) Xie Jun - Polgar, Zsuzsa 0-1 Najdorf Sicilian

Game 4 is not available at the moment. My thanks to Shay Bushinsky
for the result.

3) FIDE President's Press Conference.
--------------------------------------

FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov held a press conference
in Moscow to expand upon his ideas for a knockout World
Championships. It is unclear whether those close to him
are telling him how much this new idea is loathed by everyone
or if he is genuinely ploughing ahead in the face of this.

What is very unclear to me is how he believes this essentially
random event is supposed to be media friendly. Tennis is given
as the analogy, I would say this event is the equivalent to
settling tennis matches by playing a couple of games and
if there is a tie after that jumping straight to a tie break
to decide the match. Stupid. However at the moment there appears
no way of stopping this suggested new format of event.

There is a suggestion that the new event start in Groningen
and finish in Wijk aan Zee.

Anand is quoted as saying that the World number one should be
decided by rating. At the moment this is De Facto the case.

4) Keres Memorial Tournament by Mart Tarmak
-------------------------------------------

The Paul Keres memorial tournament started in Parnu. This town on the west
coast of Estonia is the town of his schoolyears and his very first successes
in chess. At the opening ceremony in Parnu's Town Hall his widow Maria Keres
took part, the opening words were said by the President of Estonia Lennart Meri.
There are actually three tournaments are going on at the same time in the
big hall of the hotel Strand.

2. g Lembit Oll 	 (EST) 2640;

1. g Aloyzas Kveinys 	 (LTU) 2500;
2. g Edvins Kengis 	 (LAT) 2570;
3. Riho Liiva 		 (EST) 2425;

        Women (women X category)

With GMs Rakhil Eidelson (BLS), Marta Litinskaja (UKR) and Olga Stjashkina (RUS),
Russian Championship's silver medalist Jekaterina Kovalevskaja,
Finnish champion Johanna Paasikangas
Inna Dubinka (UKR)
Four Estonia players who were very good in Moscow Olympiad -
Monika Tsoganova, Tatjana Fomina, Leili Parnpuu and Tuulikki Laesson.

The results of the first round on Friday: Short - Khalifman draw, Sokolov -
Ehlvest draw, Oll - Hracek 1:0. (This last game will be added, other games
of A and B tournament later). In B tournament Liiva - Gyimesi 1:0, all other
games were drawn.

5) Karpov in Belgrade
---------------------

On Saturday a strong Cat XVI
6 player double round tournament started
in Belgrade. It will move on to another city for the second
half of the event. Karpov, Bareev, Salov are the foreign players
and Peter Popovic is one of the three local players.

6) Kasparov vs Deep Blue. The IBM - ACM Chess Challenge.
---------------------------------------------------------

It is reasonably well known that I am not a fan of computer
chess but one really has to take ones hat off to the
promoters of these matches. Kasparov's match against
Fritz 4 Pentium sponsored by INTEL in London was given the
kind of publicity effort that has been sadly lacking in both
the FIDE and PCA cycles recently (the PCA INTEL New York final
excepted).

This match will I believe receive a large amount of coverage
when it takes place Feb 10,11, 13,14, 16,17 1996. Kasparov
is reportedly preparing against various top class computers.
As Van der Wiel said after his victory in the AEGON tournament
the big secret for the human is not to start playing chess but
to treat it as an almost entirely different game.

The match will receive on the www the kind of coverage that
one should expect for top class tournaments.

http://www.ibm.com/Stretch/EOS/deepblue.html

gives a general introduction to the match and

http://www.ibm.park.org/chess.html

promises us live coverage, expert commentary etc.

7) Kasparov clock simultaneous in Brazil by Antonio Bento.
----------------------------------------------------------

Gary Kasparov played a "clock simul" (2 hours for each/ 2:30 - Kasparov)
against the Brazilian team (3 players from the Olympiad Brazilian Team and 3
players nominated by Rio de Janeiro Chess Federation. The event was held on
January 27th in Rio de Janeiro Jockey Club - El Turf, Rio de Janeiro City,
Brazil.

The result was a 5-1 victory for Kasparov:

8) Results from Ubeda Open (January 20-29) by Martin Borriss
---------------------------------------------------------

A strong open took place in Ubeda, Spain (near Linares). 32 GM and about 40
IM (135 players total) played a ten-round swiss.
As expected, one of the Armenian national team members took first prize
(500000 pesetas). Among the players not in the prize money ranged the
participation of David Bronstein (played with Botwinnik for WM title in
1951!) and 11 year old Marc Paragua (Philippines) were the major attractions
for (surprisingly many) people visiting the tournament.

SECOND ROUND: The Grand Masters on Top by Roberto Alvarez
-------------------------------------------------------------

All the favorites (excepting IM Claudia Amura who managed to obtain a draw
in a lost ending against Jose Uncal, and IM Alejandro Hoffman the same
against Montes de Oca) wins his games, but some of them with very fighter
jobs !
Grand Master Ariel Sorin played very well an attack game against the Slav
defense used by former Argentina's chess champion Carlos Eleodoro Juarez.
ELO favorite uruguayan IM Andres Rodriguez using his favorite Dutch defence
defeated Juan Carlos De las Heras after neutralizing an interesting piece
sacrifice.
Good estrategy is the correct world to explain the victory of russian GM
Maxim Sorokin against FM Carlos Bulcourf using a rare variant of slav defence
(1.d4 c6 2.c4 b5 ?!?). Meanwhile, Panno and Ricardi haven't any troubles for
defeating his opponents. Too, and interesting game was Franz Benko (82 years!)
agains former U-16 world champion Marcelo Tempone who breaked Franz's
resistance in 60 moves.

BLACK IS OK ? : A bad day for blacks (c) Roberto Alvarez
------------------------------------------------------------

The third round was one plenty of surprises. On board 2 Hernan Filgueira
(a young player with FM strenght) draw against the "always" slav used by
IGM Maxim Sorokin (his play is very solid with blacks). Meanwhile, the
another co-leaders defeated his opponents : IM Ricardi mades an unclear
piece sacrifice against Eduardo Peralta but after several complications
won the game, and IM Andres Rodriguez beated former junior world champion
IM Carlos Bielicki thanks a good positional job.
But the main news was the defeat of IGM Ariel Sorin in hands of FM Antonio
Anelli fighting the King's Indian Defence with the Saemisch Attack. Another
surprise was the draw in board 5: FM Alberto Juarez against IGM Oscar
Panno (one of the american all times greatest chessplayers). Juarez missed
some opportunities and then the draw was unavoidable.
Why I sad that blacks had a bad day ? For the first 10 boards, white scores
70 % and for all first 31, a solid plus: 63% . Blacks pieces are claiming
for revenge ....

THREE MASTERS ON TOP by Roberto Alvarez
====================
Only three players holds the ideal 4 points after the same number of
rounds : ELO favorite IM Andres Rodriguez (URU), argentine 's chess
champion IM Pablo Ricardi and former U-16 world champion IM Marcelo
Tempone.
As announced in my previous report, the 4th round was one for Black's
revenge, obtaining a very good score of 50 % in the first 10 boards,
mainly for the victories of the three leaders : Rodriguez beated IM
Rodolfo Garbarino using a french defence, Ricardi using the development
by king's fianchetto in a well known variation of Sicilian Alapin, and
Tempone with a king's indian defence.
Tomorrow is the 5th round, with high interestings games in the first
boards.

ANDRES RODRIGUEZ ALWAYS in BOARD 1 ! (c) Roberto Alvarez
====================================

Uruguayan IM Andres Rodriguez, ELO favorite (2575 !?) is the only one leader
after 6 rounds, thanks an very interesting win agains Argentina's chess
Champion IM Pablo Ricardi, featuring a sicilian defense.
The leader is follow by the Grand Masters (russian Sorokin, and argentines
Sorin and Panno) and too the better local chessplayer, FM Enrique Scarella
who beated IM Pablo Ricardi in the sixth round, after Ricardi refused a
draw by repetition.
We are waiting for the main games, between the top masters and Grandmasters !
My pronostics for the next round :
				Rodriguez 1-0 Sorin
				Szmetan 1/2 Sorokin
				Scarella 1/2 Panno
				Celis 0-1 Tempone

ANDRES RODRIGUEZ SEEMS UNSTOPPABLE (c) Roberto Alvarez
===================================

Seven rounds finished. And uruguayan IM Andres Rodriguez (ELO 2575, 1 GM
norm and surely the first uruguayan with real possibilities to obtain the
GM tittle) continues unbeated with 6 wins and only one draw, leading alone
the XLVI Villa Ballester Intl. open, one of the most important chess opens
in South America.
Several surprises ... or maybe not ? Young Gustavo Celis (ARG) defeated
IM Marcelo Tempone in an interesting struggle demolishing his Scandinavian
defence. And FM Enrique Scarella makes a big result beating former junior
World Champion IGM Oscar Panno after Oscar captured a "poissoned" pawn.
Scarella is making a very good tournament, with 75% agains media ELO of
2490 !!.
My prognostics for the 8th round ? Not sure after obtain 50 % in my previous...
But IM Andres Rodriguez will obtain a draw or more, and for Sorokin-Scarella
I can imagine a hard positional fight...

TIME OF DECISIONS (C) Roberto Alvarez
=================

How to plan the game for the last round ? A difficult decisin. IM Andres
Rodriguez, unbeated, and a full point ahead his today opponent, IM Fabian
Fiorito, needs only a draw to win the first prize and all the glory.
But playing with black pieces, and against a fighter like Fiorito, the task
could be a very difficult one.
Remember David Bronstein's worlds "If you need only a draw, the best way
to obtain it is fighting for a win !". Several chessplayers lost his last
rounds games needing only a draw ...
Another possibility is that three masters could tied for first: if Fiorito
beats Rodriguez, and Sorokin beats Ricardi, the first place will be decided
using Bucholz. Tomorrow we will know the truth.

================================

No fight at all on board 1:Only a short draw, like recognizing
Andres Rodriguez best play. Uruguayan IM Andres Rodriguez finished
unbeated after 9 rounds, with 7 wins and only 2 draw (both with
black pieces). Second finished russian IGM Maxim Sorokin after
beating IM Pablo Ricardi, and third IM Fabian Fiorito.
A remarkable game was the victory of IGM Oscar Panno against
Diego Mariano Belmonte, after a beatiful queen sacrifice, remenbering
Bobotsov-Tal, Varna ol 1962.

14) Raul Herman Charlier Memorial Sao Paulo
---------------------------------------

Eduardo Limp won this event which was played in Sao Paulo Chess Club 11th to 15th of January.
The time rate was 1:00 to 23 moves + 1:00 KO. The Sao Paulo Chess Club
has 4 floors and I think is the biggest chessclub in world.
Paulo Faria did not play round 2.

My thanks to Adriano Von Pfuhl Rodrigues for the games.

15) Internet Chess Club: Computer defeats GM Gulko in Man versus Machine Match
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eric Peterson reports:

The Internet Chess Club presented another in its series of Man versus
Machine matches on Sunday, January 28. Grandmaster Boris Gulko (1994 US
Champion) was defeated 2-0 by "Ferret", the World Microcomputer Amateur
Champion. Time control for each game was Game in 30 minutes. Over 80
spectators watched the live match from around the world. The result was
unexpected as GM Gulko scored 4-2 in the recent Harvard Cup against six
computer programs.

16) Linklater Memorial Northern California's Invitational Championship
----------------------------------------------------------------------

There are a number of points to make clear after last week's posting
on this event.

1. The Linklater memorial tournament is Northern California's Official
Invitational Championship. We have an open champion and a closed champion.
The winner of the Linklater is the Northern California Closed Champion.
It is an official Californian tournament sponsored by the Mechanics'
Institute and CalChess among others. The event is largely funded from the
estate of Linklater.

2. The event should not be confused with the Open Championships which
also is played for every year. This year Eric Schiller and Burt Izumikawa
were officially Co-Open Champions of Northern California. For the purposes
of who got the trophy that goes with the title a tie-break was applied
which meant that Eric Schiller got the trophy.

I'll try and round up the games and results next week.
