1) Introduction

My thanks to Varlam Vepkhvishvili, Jakub Fuksik, Mikel Larreategi, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Harun Taner, Efstratios Grivas, Dimitris Skyrianoglou, George Mirijanian, Jan Mazuch, Pavel Matocha, Arvind Aaron, Massimo Casa, Michiel Abeln, Peter Doggers and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The 71st Corus Chess tournament is underway. Its very early days with a big group on 2/3 and the top seeds not yet getting going. There are actually three exicting fields this year with the B and C Groups having some interesting names. The Corus event is one of the absolute major tournaments of the year, it takes place against the background of economic crisis which seems to have totally brought down the FIDE Grand Prix after one of its scheduled two years. It may be the sign of this to come for other tournaments aswell as major companies look at their sponsorship deals. Hopefully this won't affect the Corus tournament itself.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

4) 7th Parsvnath Open

The winner SS Ganguly. Photo © Arvind Aaron

The 7th Parsvnath Open took place 10th-20th January 2009. Surya Shekhar Ganguly edged out Mikhail Ulibin on tie-break after both finished on 8½/10. I would plea with the bulletin editors to put together the material they have created in one database, look at it, and ask themselves whether the mess they created was really intended. What they did was reasonably well documented but the incompatibility of the live material from Monroi and that which the bulletin editors created produces a horror show. In general I think it was the Monroi naming that is all messed up. I was up until 2am on Sunday night trying to make sense of it all, no guarantees I did.

Arvind Aaron reports: Ganguly Wins Parsvnath Open At Delhi

Six-time Indian champion Grand Master Surya Shekhar Ganguly of Kolkata won the 7th Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament at Modern School in Barakhamba in Delhi on January 19. Ganguly had the higher tie-break score than Mikhail Ulibin of Russia after both players tied for the first place on 8.5/10 each. "From the tournament point of view my win over Kostenko was an important game," said Ganguly. Ganguly took home over Rs.200,000 (USD 4500) Indian Rupees. The total prize fund was Rs.11,50,000. Organiser and FIDE Zone President of the Indian Sub-Continent Bharat Singh Chauhan said there will be an eighth edition in 2010 and the prize fund will be Rs.12,50,000. This year 426 players from 17 countries took part. GM Norms were completed by three Indians: S.P. Sethuraman, P. Karthikeyan (both Chennai) and Prathamesh Mokal (Pune). Twenty GMs took part.

16) Grand Prix Karlovy Vary Cancelled

In what seems to be the death knell of the whole series Bessel Kok announces the cancellation of what would have been the last event of the series. As far as I know there are no events left in the series now. Three reasons are given but I guess in fact that even if the first two weren't problems number three (the sponsors are feeling the global economic collapse) would have done for the event anyhow. Its going to be a very cold economic climate for a few years now. One FIDE official stated to me that the collapse of the Grand Prix shows that Bessel Kok wouldn't have been any good as FIDE President either. Bessel Kok has left Global Chess, the organisers, but the series was widely seen as his baby. I put that out there as a discussion point but it will be interesting to see if people do find explanations as to what went wrong. I've also deleted the schedule for the Grand Prix. If I'm wrong and there are events still left in this series then no doubt someone will let me know.

Bessel Kok and Pavel Matocha issue following statement

We have been informed that the NWR coal corporation which intended to support the Grand Prix in Karlovy Vary in December 2009 will not enter into sponsorship. This information and the reasons behind this decision were already communicated to Geoffrey Borg and FIDE and also to grandmaster David Navara, who was nominated by the Czech organisers to Grand Prix tournaments.

There are multiple reasons for this decision:

1. the withdrawal of top players from the GrandPrix tournaments (mainly withdrawal of Magnus Carlsen, the number one player of the GP and the most media atractive player is problem)

2. the confusion on the role of the winner of the Grand Prix (will be there the match between the winner of GP and the winner of World Cup for the right to play the worldchampionship match? or there will be a candidates tournament?), it is unacceptable to change the rules during the game

3. the current financial crisis, which wiped out 80% of market value of NWR and sponsoring has been their first cut in operating expenditure.

ICC and FICS client for mobile phones

Mats Luthman has written a program that connects to ICC and FICS, compatable with many modern mobile phones. I've been looking for something like this for a while for watching live tournaments if I'm out and about. Its a nice free solution, you can also play but I haven't tried that.
