1) Introduction

My thanks to Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, Bela Lengyel, Harald Grafenhofer, Thomas Henrich, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Emmanuel Variniac, Miklos Orso, Stefan Loeffler, Frank Berry, Ozgur Akman, John Saunders, Michael Rahal and everyone else who helped with the issue.

I never really know what to say when I pass another mile-stone. I only reach them by working one week at a time, and so in a way this week hasn't been any different to any other. Also is 750 better than 15 years? Who knows? I mention this because that milestone is coming this year too. The first issue of TWIC was released on the 17th September 1994. At the time I was reporting bits on pieces of chess news and games on the internet and decided to round them all up in one place. This little hobby rapidly got out of control, people from around the world sent me increasing amounts of news and games. It is important to say that without all the people who have helped me over the years TWIC wouldn't be what it is today or probably around at all. So my thanks to the many, many people who have helped and contributed over the years. It is also important to mention Anjo Anjewierden whose work and software on the normalisation of names to produce tables and games in PGN has been at the heart of TWIC. I have some ideas which I hope to impliment soon that will take this work forward.

Returning to a little TWIC history. TWIC was soon taking all my time and I decided it was either time to go professional or give up. I found a sponsor. With issue 96 on 19th August 1996 I found a temporary home with Thoth Communications Corporation part of Grandmaster Technologies Incorporated a company that ran out of money around 9 months after I arrived (such were internet start ups). I had to look around again. Issue 161 on the 8th December 1997 saw me make an agreement with Malcolm Pein and the London Chess Centre and it is this support and co-operation that has made it even possible to get close to issue 750. I doubt I could have found anyone better than Malcolm to work with and I really thank him.

The chess scene has changed a lot over the years. Almost every major event is covered on the internet, many are covered comprehensively. It is also the case that many more ordinary events are covered excellently and there is also much more competition (although everyone has their own ideas about what they want to do) in this area, which is just great for the game and people following the game. It is certain I wouldn't have started if things were as they are now. Chess deserves the kind of coverage it has. In 1993 I discovered both the internet and the fact that I was one of the better informed people on the medium. I should mention Die Schachwoche, Schach 64 Magazin, the Yugoslav newspaper Politika (I worked at Bradford University at the time and was very fortunate we took this newspaper) and Malcolm Pein's column in the Telegraph as being my best non-internet sources in those days.

I do think I have more to do. I have a number of ideas on how to improve both the TWIC Magazine and the web pages. I think there have been incremental improvements over the last year or so but I'm even more excited about some of the changes I want to make. I think the basics are right but upgrades in presentation and organisation made possible by programming should follow in the next few months. I think I'm just as motivated by getting these ideas to work as I was at the start of the magazine. It has been a fairly long road looking into new internet technologies, something I wish I'd done earlier, but it is also true that things like CSS style sheets, PHP, MySQL are starting to work better and become more accessable than they have been.

I feel privileged to be doing such work and expect to get to 1000 and 20 years at least. I also expect the next year or so to be a really interesting time for me. I wish you all well and thank you for your support which has been almost uniformly kind over the years.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

22) 10th Internet Chess Tournament - Ciudad de Dos Hermanas

The Ciudad de Dos Hermanas Internet tournament took place on Internet Chess Club (ICC), March 13th-21st 2009. News: IM Michael Rahal (EDAMI, Barcelona)

During nine days the tenth edition of the Internet Chess Tournament "Ciudad de Dos Hermanas", has been battled out on the Internet Chess Club www.chessclub.com. With 1975 registrations, amongst them many of the best blitz players in the world, this event has definitely become one of the biggest chess events in the world, both online and on-the-board. It's not easy to find a chess festival with so many sportsmen participating.

With this event, the Seville city and its Sports Council continue to promote chess as an educational tool and sports promotion, combining it with the on-the-board Open that will be held on the 28th of March (details: http://www.doshermanas.net/actividades.asp?id=51) with more than 15 GM's already registered.

After the drop-out of IM Robert Hess, the 32 finalists, 26 of them Grand Masters, held a two-day battle until the quick play specialist Ukranian GM Dmitry Kononenko (2574)  defeated in the final another great blitz player, Armenian GM Zaven Andriasyan (2564) by a clear 3.5 to 1.5. In his path to the final, Kononenko had to overcome the two pre-event favourites: American GM Hikaru Nakamura and the winner of the previous two editions of the event, Jorge Sammour-Hasbun. Thus, his victory is a great achievement.

The total prize fund was 7.500 euros with the winner receiving a 2.000 euros first prize.

London super-tournament in December 2009

Cream of world chess to play in new London tournament. [Press release 9th March 2009]

London Chess Centre is proud to announce a world-class chess tournament to be held in London in December, 2009. The event will be an elite eight-player all-play-all in the most prestigious tournament in the capital since former world champion Anatoly Karpov won the Phillips and Drew Masters in 1984.

Since then, despite London hosting three world title contests, there has not been a tournament in which England's leading players could lock horns with the world's best on home soil. The December 09 tournament will be the first in a series of events designed to reinvigorate UK chess and promote the game and its undoubted educational benefits in schools and communities.

The tournament will be FIDE Category 19 with an average FIDE rating of 2700 and a minimum prize fund of €100,000. The eight players will comprise of three English and five world-class Grandmasters from abroad. Included in the prize fund will be a €10,000 Brilliant Game award along with separate prizes for each victory with the White and Black pieces. Matches will be covered live online where fans will be able to vote for Game of the Day.

The tournament has applied for membership of the prestigious annual Grand Slam of Chess which culminates in Bilbao and boasts a €400,000 prize fund.

The games will be under Classical Chess time control; 40 moves in two hours, 20 in the subsequent hour then an additional 15 minutes plus an increment of 30 seconds a move until the end of the game. The tournament will further benefit from the use of Sofia Rules which disallow early draws. Players will receive three points for a win and one for a draw.

The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, December 10 and will include a blindfold chess display and charity simultaneous. Play will take place daily from Friday, December 11 to Thursday, December 17 inclusive.

The list of players and venue will be announced in April.

Zuerich Chess Club 200th Anniversary

Dr. Christian Rohrer reports: The world's oldest chess club celebrates its 200th year with spectacular jubilee events, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich celebrates 200th anniversary with spectacular jubilee events

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, the world's oldest chess club, celebrates its 200th year in 2009 with spectacular jubilee events. To mark the anniversary, some of the greatest masters of the last five decades, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand, will play at the event. Highlights will be a simultaneous exhibition and a rapid chess tournament on the 22nd and 23rd of August, held in Zurich Main Railway Station. With generous sponsor support from Credit Suisse the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich continues its long standing tradition of world class chess tournaments.

On Saturday the 22nd of August, in simultaneous games 200 amateurs will be honoured to face eight word-class chess players, who have made historical contributions to world chess over the last 50 years: Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Viktor Korchnoi, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Spassky, Ruslan Ponomariov and Veselin Topalov. On Sunday the 23rd of August, these champions will compete against each other in an exciting rapid chess format. Judit Polgar, the strongest female chess player ever, and Werner Hug of Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, former world junior chess champion, will replace Kasparov and Spassky, who have retired from competitive chess.

A huge number of spectators, from enthusiasts to the generally curious, is expected for the events at Zurich Railway Main Station. And no one need miss it: All commemorative events will be streamed live via Internet.

The jubilee commences with an open tournament; certain to be one of the most exciting open chess tournaments of 2009. Players of every skill level, from beginners to the elite world class, are expected and will be welcomed at the Zurich Kongresshaus from August 9th to the 15th, 2009. They will compete in two tournaments, 9 rounds each, for CHF 100.000 guaranteed prize money and many attractive prizes.

To further honour the occasion, Richard Forster, reputable chess historian, will release his comprehensive book, researched in great detail, on the unique history of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich. Entitled "Schachgesellschaft Zuerich: 1809 bis 2009", Forster's work will analyze the development of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich from the times of Napoleon to the present day.
