1) Introduction

My thanks to Adolivio Capece, Alberto Mascarenhas, Chirila Radu-Catalin, Christian Rohrer, Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, Efstratios Grivas, Santiago Garcìa Ramos, Igor Glek, John MacArthur, John Shaw, Juha Kivijarvi, Bela Lengyel, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Manfred Mussnig, Merijn van Delft, Miklos Orso, Pilar Molina, Remco Hekhuis, Sergey Sudakov, Jan Krabbenbos, Thomas Henrich and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another amazing week of chess. The FIDE Grand Prix tournament in Jermuk has a great field and is just in the process of warming up. Also the start of the celebrations of the 200th Anniversary of the Zuerich Chess Club sees a great field headed by Alexander Morozevich contest a 9 round swiss. London sees the Staunton Memorial with a UK vs the Netherlands match. Nigel Short's hot streak continues with a 2/2 start. The British Championship saw some of the best chess in a number of years and a new champion in David Howell. The summer chess festival season continues with numerous events. Plenty to get your teeth into.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

19) 110th US Open

The 110th US Open took place 1st-9th August 2009. Alex Lendermann, Sergey Kudrin, Alex Yermolinsky, Jacek Stopa, Jesse Kraai and Dmitry Gurevich finished on 7.5/9. The top two GMs on tiebreak, Dmitry Gurevich and Sergey Kudrin had a blitz playoff for the official title. Gurevich drew with black to take the title. The games are practically impossible to sort out as the players were in multiple sections with withdrawals etc (or at least I hope so as some players played a lot more than 9 games). The games from the leading players are in reasonable shape however.

20) Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls

Yang Dai, formerly of China and now from the state of Virginia, dominated the 2009 Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls with a score of 6-0. Yang faced stiff competition in the last three rounds from last year's champion, Courtney Jamison as well as last year's runner-up, Linda Diaz. Courtney Jamison, entering her senior year of secondary school, earned a full academic scholarship to Texas Tech University. Texas Tech, located in Lubbock, Texas, is the proud host and sponsor of the Susan Polgar Invitational.

Each of the 50 states are asked to qualify just one participant either perhaps by rating or from a state qualifier, usually the state's High School Championship. This year's Invitational brought 60 girls from all over the United States together for the annual 6-round Fide time control (game in 90min/30sec added) event. Several girls were also able to qualify through Susan's World Open for Girls, held during the National Open in Las Vegas and another qualifier held in Arizona. Nine of the girls also received special invitations including two from Idaho who finished equal with the state's representative, Erica Barkell, who also qualified for the Denker High School Invitational Championship. Erica is the third Polgar participant to qualify and play in both prestigious events. The previous Denker/Polgar participants were Polgar champions, Abby Marshall and Courtney Jamison.

Final Standings: 1. Yang Dai 6.0 2-3. Rachel Gita Gologorsky, Epiphany Peters 5.0 4-7. Linda V. Diaz, Courtney Jamison, Samyukta Bhat, Joanne Koong 4.5

The London Chess Centre is pleased to announce that the line up for the London Chess Classic 2009 is complete after GM David Howell of England accepted his invitation. This creates a balance to the event, an eight player all play all, with four world class players pitched against England's four highest rated Grandmasters. Using the latest available ratings and information supplied by the players on their recent successes, the tournament rating average is currently well above 2690 and may reach 2700 by December.

Nigel Short and Hikaru Nakamura are both in great shape. Nigel recently dominated the Sigeman tournament at Malmo and Hikaru won the US Championship held at St Louis. Vladimir Kramnik was top scorer at the Azerbaijan v Rest of the World match with 6.5/8.

Play begins Tuesday December 8th and runs until Tuesday December 15th 2009.
