1) Introduction

My thanks to Valery Maes, Adolivio Capece, Axel Fritz, Haroon Rashid, Antonio Castello, Christian Rohrer, Douglas Griffin, Emmanuel Variniac, Herman Van de Wynkele, Hugh Brodie, John Hillery, Konstantin Mashkov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Lubo Ftacnik, Mikhail Golubev, Lazlo Nagy, Richard Fireman, Wolfgang Perner, Yannick Pelletier, Vladimir Malakhov and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another busy week, but probably chess festivals are starting to wind down a little. The NH Chess tournament finished with the experience team beating the Rising Stars. Plusses for Peter Heine Nielsen, Peter Svidler and Ljubomir Ljubojevic for the Experience team along with Jan Smeets for the Rising Stars. Negatives for Hikaru Nakamura for whom after a period of heavy activity this was an event too far. History for the FIDE Rating list as it goes to Bi-Monthly publication and it's first ever September publication. History as Anatoly Karpov falls out. I'm making a guess (I'm not sure if he was in the top 100 in the first list in 1970), I might be wrong, but it is entirely possible that with Karpov's exit no-one from the original top 100 is left in the list. He certainly must be it's most long standing member.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) NH Chess Tournament

The Experience Team beat the Rising Stars in the NH Chess Tournament 27.5-22.5.

Last year the Rising Stars won 33.5-16.5 so a major effort was made to beef up the Experience team. Key to the margin was probably the poor form probably caused by ill-health of Hikaru Nakamura. He has taken advantage of a lot of invitations recently but it is probably time for a rest for him.

Peter Heine Nielsen was the top scorer for the Experience side with 6.5/10, Peter Svidler scored 6/10. The only plus score for the Rising Stars was Jan Smeets and with this he has earned a place in the 2010 Amber Tournament.

Ljubomir Ljubojevic was a surprise plus scorer for the Experience team. He rarely plays these days and recent results for veterans who don't prepare haven't been encouraging. 5.5/10 was a very fine score for him and he will gain a huge amount of rating points. Loek van Wely was the only Experience player below 50%.

Final Score: Experience 27.5 - Rising Stars 22.5.

3) FIDE Rating List for September 2009

For the first time there is now a September Rating List. The list I believe will be updated every two months. Topalov and Anand remain in place. Aronian and Carlsen swap places. Ivanchuk fell from 12 to 30 last time, now he jumps back to 8 which is where he belongs. Jakovenko has played a number of top events and struggled a bit so he drops to 11 from 5. Nigel Short is back as England's number one for the first time since who knows when as he jumps back over 2700, but he probably would have been there anyhow as Adams precipitous drop continues, he is now 50 in the world, he was number 12 last October. 2643 gets you in the list, Anatoly Karpov drops out of the top 100 for the first time, probably since the list's inception.

31) Zuerich Chess Club 200th Anniversary

The Zuerich Chess Club 200th Anniversay Jubilee started with an open tournament 9th-15th August 2009. Alexander Areshchenko took the title with a superior tie-break. This was reported last week.

This was followed by the Champions Simul on August 22nd where 8 great players played members of the public in a huge simul. 200 amateurs played against eight champions who have left indelible marks on chess in the past 50 years: Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Viktor Korchnoi, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Spassky, Ruslan Ponomariov and Veselin Topalov.

Finally on the 23rd August there was the Champions Rapid where Vladimir Kramnik edged out Viswanathan Anand by half a point, both players were undefeated.

The top two boards of the Simultaneous exhibition are now available. If players have additional games they played in this simul I'd be interested in seeing them.

35) Forthcoming Events and Links

48th World Junior Championships

The 48th World Junior Championships (27th for Girls) take place in Mar del Plata, Argentina 16th-29th October 2009. No website yet.

There are many junior titles but this is the only one of historic importance. Borislav Ivkov was the first champion, Oscar Panno, Boris Spassky, William Lombardy, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Beliavsky, Tony Miles, Artur Jussupow, Yasser Seirawan, Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand and Levon Aronian are by no means the only well known players to have taken the title over the years. The event is for players under-20. (List: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Junior_Chess_Championship)

These are not to be confused with the World Youth Championships which take place in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, November 11th 2009 (arrival) - November 23rd 2009 (departure). These are of less historic interest although the under-18 group is always pretty well fought, there are way too many sections (I'd cut off at under-16 or under-14 and have a more fun based festival for the younger players) the idea of a World under-8 Championship of anything is just not right.

The London Chess Classic in December

Cream of world chess to play in new London tournament. [Press release 25th June 2009]

The London Chess Centre is pleased to announce that the line up for the London Chess Classic 2009 is complete after GM David Howell of England accepted his invitation. This creates a balance to the event, an eight player all play all, with four world class players pitched against England's four highest rated Grandmasters. Using the latest available ratings and information supplied by the players on their recent successes, the tournament rating average is currently well above 2690 and may reach 2700 by December.

Nigel Short and Hikaru Nakamura are both in great shape. Nigel recently dominated the Sigeman tournament at Malmo and Hikaru won the US Championship held at St Louis. Vladimir Kramnik was top scorer at the Azerbaijan v Rest of the World match with 6.5/8.

Play begins Tuesday December 8th and runs until Tuesday December 15th 2009.

The venue for what will be the most prestigious chess tournament in the capital for 25 years will be announced shortly.
