1) Introduction

My thanks to Dragan Babic, Luis Scalise, Igor Glek, Miklos Orso, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, John Hillery, Christophe Philippe, Elie Houlichian, Arnaud Hauchard, Ted Strong, Alberto Mascarenhas, Yuri Vovk, Stewart Reuben, Dave Clayton and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Unive tournament in Hoogevenn is under way. Vassily Ivanchuk is the favourite but the return of Judit Polgar and Anish Giri's performance will also be of interest. The first two rounds have seen all games drawn. The Bundesliga in Germany is under way. Coming this week are the European Team Championships and the World Juniors, and even stronger events such as the Tal Memorial are on their way. Plenty to get excited about.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) Corus Wijk aan Zee 2010

The field for the 2010 Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee has been announced. Dates Friday 15th January 2010 - Sunday 31st January 2010.

Official site: http://www.coruschess.com

The A-Group is category XIX and once again is a pretty exciting field.

World Champion Viswanathan Anand plays in the event in which he has competed many times since his debut in 1989. Anand won or shared first in 1989, 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2006. He didn't play last year.

Magnus Carlsen has a history in the tournament going back to 2004. The organisers made a special effort to invite him but even they can't have expected him to run away with the C-Group with 10.5/13. In 2007 he played in the A-Group for the first time, finishing last, but without disgracing himself. It seems to have been an important learning experience as shortly after he finished in second place in the Linares tournament. He tied for 4th place last year but could easily start as the favourite for the tournament.

Former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik has had a quiet time of it recently but will play in London in December and now Wijk aan Zee in January. Kramnik shared first in 1998 but since then even though he has been a pretty regular visitor he hasn't repeated the success.

Peter Leko the champion from 2005 has also been a regular visitor to the tournament over the years.

Vassily Ivanchuk is another regular visitor to the event, although he's never been in the peak form required to win the tournament.

"Why does Nakamura never get invited to the top tournaments?" was a question I was asked a few times in recent years. Now he gets invited to everything and he naturally plays this year in Wijk. Will always produce excitement and has had a good run of results recently to back the invites up.

Alexei Shirov can best be described as mercurial. He generally hasn't been at his best at Wijk but one of these years will be, and maybe this will be the year.

Sergey Karjakin was born the same year as Magnus Carlsen but has been slightly left in his wake. But at 19 he hasn't done a lot wrong in his career so far and it will be interesting to see his response. But let's not forget that he is also the defending champion after winning the event last year.

Cuba has a great history for chess with a world champion in Capablanca and a great memorial tournament. Leinier Dominguez Perez is 22 in the world and is due an invitation such as this.

Nigel Short seemed to lose his way for a while and inexorably on his way down. However in the last couple of years he has found new energy and a new way of working which has taken him back to being England's number one. His secret seems to be to play a lot more than he did in the past and it is working. Short has a very recognisable style of play at his best and that has clearly returned with some tremendously entertaining stuff in recent times. Should be a great addition to the field.

Fabiano Caruana won the B-Group last year from Nigel Short, but only after the latter completely blew up at the end of their game in the final round. They both made it to the A-Group so no real damage was done. The youngest player in the field.

The Dutch contingent is headed by Sergei Tiviakov who will no doubt be incredibly difficult to beat. Loek van Wely has regularly flown the flag for Dutch chess, he's had his ups and downs but is always really well prepared for Wijk. Jan Smeets made his debut in the A-Group last year and will be no doubt hoping to at least match his middle ranking finish of last year.

The B-Group is a not too shabby category 16 and once again they have a mixed field of youth and experience that should provide some real entertainment.

4) Schachbundesliga 2009-10

The Schachbundesliga in Germany is the strongest league in the world. Although with the recession as it is we will have to see how their teams are affected. Games started on Friday 16th with some of the Round 7 games that were played on different dates for the teams. The real Round 1 and 2 were on Saturday and Sunday 17th-18th October 2009.

After two rounds (plus additional round 7 matches played on Friday night) Emsdetten have started with a perfect record of three wins and 6 points. Eppingham are a point behind after two wins and a draw. Bremen, top seeds Baden Baden and Hamberger SK are on two wins from two matches and 4 points.

5) Anand - Topalov Sofia 2010

ChessBase and ChessDom are reporting that FIDE have accepted the Sofia bid to host the FIDE World Championship Match between World Champion Viswanathan Anand and his challenger Veselin Topalov. The dates quoted in their bid are April 5th-24th 2010 and there will be a 12 game match for the title. If the match is drawn there will be playoff starting with a tie-break of four rapid games.

FIDE announced on October 1st 2009 that after their first deadline they had received three bids had been received at the FIDE Secretariat in Athens. These bid were from Bulgaria, Singapore and Turkey. However they were not accompanied by accompanied by financial guarantees. However none of the bids provided such a guarantee and they extended the deadline until October 15th to meet this condition.

This deadline coincided with the 80th FIDE Congress in Halkidiki, Greece October 11th - 18th, 2009.

Today it has been announced (although not yet on the FIDE website) that the bid from Sofia, Bulgaria is the only bid to come up with a guarantee, in this case in the form of a letter from the Bulgarian PM Boiko Borisov. Thus FIDE unanimously accepted the bid.

According to ChessDom the bid is for a prize fund of 3 million euros and the venue NDK in Sofia which is the same building where the Topalov - Kamsky match took place, although in a larger hall.

Anand has indicated that he will obviously have to negotiate a contract for the event.

In distant past champions and challengers regularly refused to play venues they didn't like, but that was then, this is now.

Finally a word of warning. I've been covering chess on the internet for 15 years now. I haven't kept score, but I would say well over half such "announcements" of venues, dates and so forth for title matches, turned out to be wrong. I go right back to the PCA run Anand - Kasparov match where I had an "exclusive" that it was all fixed for Germany, turned out to be in USA. Since then it is FIDE that have quite a record of announcements that don't turn out to be that final. That said, it's really hard to see an alternative to Sofia in this case.

11) World Chess Tour Moscow 2009

Igor Glek reports: Two round-robin tournaments took place in Moscow 4th-12th as part of the Classical Chess WCT non-stop tournaments series in Moscow.

In the GM tournament (the third GM event since series started in July) the first GM Norm has been made! The happy winner was IM Alexei Gavrilov with 6.5 in 9 games who made a great comeback after his unlucky participation in the first GM tournament in July. The other norms were made for a second time by 17-year-old Ivan Aldokhin (of IM) and Anastasia Savina (of WGM).

Rating favorite GM Vitaly Kunin (GER) finished in 2nd place on 6 points. 13 year old IM Illya Nyzhnik from Ukraine had excellent chances for a GM norm after a 2/2 start, but finally fell just a 1 point short with 5.5 points Illya finished in 3rd place, missing good opportunity to became youngest GM in the World.

In the IM event WIM Alexandra Shumilina became a winner as well as making a WGM norm.

The games will be available soon.

World Youth Championships

World Youth Championships takes place in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, November 11th 2009 (arrival) - November 23rd 2009 (departure). These are of less historic interest although the under-18 group is always pretty well fought, there are way too many sections (I'd cut off at under-16 or under-14 and have a more fun based festival for the younger players) the idea of a World under-8 Championship of anything is just not right.
