1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Michiel Abeln, Jan Mazuch, Adolivio Capece, John Saunders, Herman Van de Wynkele, Pierre Becker and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The first five rounds of the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee saw Alexei Shirov dominate. Shirov's run was halted with a draw against Nigel Short and then a loss to Hikaru Nakamura. Shirov still leads, by half a point from Vladimir Kramnik who has had 3.5/4 in the last few rounds including a demolition of Hikaru Nakamura in Round 8 and Magnus Carlsen who drew against the leader. The tournament looks like being between these four players although Viswanathan Anand, who has drawn all his games so far, hasn't played any of the bottom three against whom all the top players have been scoring heavily. There should be an exciting finish.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark
