1) Introduction

My thanks to Nigel Freeman, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Adolivio Capece, John Saunders, Sinisa Joksic, Manfred Schoeneberg, Georgios Souleidis, Tomas Dvorak, Miklos Orso, Ian Watson, Zenon Franco Ocampos and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The busy start to the year continues. The Gibtelecom Masters overlapped with the finish to Wijk aan Zee last week. There was revamped web coverage with live commentary and plenty of reports and photos. Michael Adams seems on his way back as he tied for first and won the playoff to take the first prize. The Moscow Open is the now traditional precursor to the Aeroflot Open taking advantage of the fact that some players choose to play both. This was won by Konstantin Chernyshov on tie-break. In addition there was another pair of rounds of the Bundesliga and we've had a busy week. The Aeroflot Open starts tomorrow and before next week the Linares tournament will see Veselin Topalov head a strong field. Unusually there is no cross-over in personel between this event and Wijk aan Zee. Plenty to be getting on with.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) Moscow Open

The Moscow Open took place 30th January - 7th February 2010 and was again pretty strong, as it immediately precedes the 9th Aeroflot Open, many players compete in both. Konstantin Chernyshov, Evgeny Bareev, Le Quang Liem and Ernesto Inarkiev finished on 7/9 with Chernyshov having the best tie-break (most wins).

Alexei Gubajdullin, the top seed in the B tournament was disqualified. The organisers believed he manipulated his ratiing prior to the event to lose enough points (57) to get under the 2300 limit for this event and the following Aeroflot Open (he presumably won't be allowed to play the B Group there either).

8) LX Abierto De Verano

The LX Abierto De Verano tournament took place 20th-31st January 2010 and Federico Perez Ponsa finished in first place on 7.5/9. Games from the final round not available. Argentina are still absent from the FIDE rating list. I haven't seen why they are unable to pay their FIDE dues but it is starting to be a real problem, and I don't doubt this is also the case for the players.

14) London Chess Centre closes after 18 years

The London Chess Centre will close its doors for the final time on the 12th of February 2010 after 18 years due to the termination of the lease on the property. However chess shoppers in London will still be able to find the full range of books, sets and software at the Baker Street Branch located at 44 Baker Street, London W1U 7RT.

About the BCM Shop: http://www.bcmchess.co.uk/shop.html and also: Here .

Mail order contact numbers will not change and the new postal address is 44 Baker Street, London W1U 7RT although a new mail order centre is planned.

The shop first opened in July of 1992 after a group led by Malcolm Pein acquired some of the assets of Robert Maxwell whose death and fall from grace led to his empire, which included some chess assets being broken up. Whilst Pergamon Press became Cadogan Books, his Chess Magazine, founded by BH Wood in 1935 was bought by Malcolm Pein who had become the UK ChessBase distributor and advertised regularly in it.

Appalled by the poor shopping experience in Foyles, the iconic bookshop in London's Charing Cross Rd where there was a huge range of books but noone on hand to give advice, Pein thought that a shop in Central London might work where players could gather, lectures held and customers served by knowledgeable staff. The idea was widely ridiculed at the time, few thought that a chess shop was viable but Pein thought that a mail order, shop and magazine would form a virtuous circle with each supporting the other. Initially the business was a disaster. While Pein was away at the Olympiad in Manila the shop was broken into three times and all the computers stolen. The administrators of the Maxwell Empire sealed the old prefab offices of Maxwell McMillan Chess and prevented the phone calls being transferred. The magazine subscriptions computer had to be smuggled out of Maxwell's former estate in Headington and Jimmy Adams the editor managed to keep publication continuous.

The staging of the world chess championship between Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short in 1993 was a stroke of luck that carried the shop through the initial difficulties and since then the business has gone from strength to strength and includes both the former BCM shop, Countrywide Computers in Cambridgeshire and two US businesses both based in Florida, Chess4Less.com and ChessBase USA. The rise of the internet has ensured continuous growth in the mail order side of the business.

The Chess Centre has hosted many events over the years, some connected with the various London tournaments and World Championships and some to promote books or indeed just chess itself. There are too many names to mention but four world champions have come to sign books or give lectures: Current World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand gave a computer exhibition in 1995, Garry Kasparov has appeared there many times, Anatoly Karpov and Vladimir Kramnik have also appeared while Viktor Korchnoi has been twice.

Many celebrities have shopped there and a small selection of names includes: Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, Griff Rhys Jones, Hugh Laurie, Clive Andersson, Dave Lee Travis, Steve Davis, Guy Ritchie and Edgar Davids.

15) Forthcoming Events and Links

European Chess Solving Championship

The European Chess Solving Championship takes place at the De Vere Sunningdale Park Hotel, at Sunningdale near Windsor on the outskirts of London. The event takes place from Friday April 9th to Monday April 12th, with the main European Championship competitions on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Contact: The ECSC Organiser Paul Valois at paulvalois@yahoo.co.uk or on 0113 2620609, or Ian Watson at ian@irwatson.demon.co.uk or on 07768 847476.

Favourite for the individual is the current European and World Champion Piotr Murdzia from Poland, but solving Grandmasters from Russia, Great Britain, Germany and many others will be keen to unseat him. Poland also hold the team title, but are likely to be outgraded by Russia who should start as favourites. Great Britain, with two former World Champions in their squad, are also expected to contend for the title.

Competitors have to solve chess problems and endgame studies, against the clock, and each round includes orthodox two-, three- and more-movers, as well as selfmates, helpmates and studies. Titles and gradings for chess solving are similar to the over-the-board system, with Grandmasters, International Masters and Fide Masters of solving. Murdzia is currently the highest rated solver with a rating of 2843.
