1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Adolivio Capece, Miklos Orso, Mitko Iliev, Christophe Philippe, Pasarelu Dan Gabriel and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Linares tournament has warmed up after a slow start in round one with a couple of very interesting rounds of chess. The performance of Veselin Topalov will be of interest in the lead up to his match against Viswanathan Anand. Anand, whilst not exactly playing badly, only won a couple of games in Wijk aan Zee so now it's time to see Topalov's form. Elsewhere the Aeroflot Open is heading for an exciting finish with a big tie for first with a couple of rounds to go. Also on at the moment is the Cappelle-la-Grande Open which used to be the big open at this time of year before Aeroflot and is still a pretty impressive tournament.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Linares 2010

The Linares tournament takes place in Spain 12th-25th February 2010.

Players: Veselin Topalov, Levon Aronian, Alexander Grischuk, Francisco Vallejo Pons, Boris Gelfand and invited for the first time in a super-tournament Vugar Gashimov who deserves his chance in this company.

Round 1 was a very quiet with 3 fairly dull draws.

Round 2. Both in Topalov - Gashimov and Grischuk against Gelfand white ended up with quite nasty pressure and better king positions that meant that holding the positions practically was extremely difficult. Even though Gashimov reduced the pawns to one side the position was almost impossible to defend. Gelfand's 29...Kh8 was losing but he was facing a long defence anyhow. The game Vallejo - Aronain was a fairly dull Berlin Defence which ended in a sterile ending on move 41.

Round 3. Levon Aronian was held by Veselin Topalov in a Modern Benoni where he seemed on the verge of getting a decisive advantage but Topalov found just enough counter-play. Boris Gelfand was held to a draw after an amazing positional queen sacrifice in a Slav by Francisco Vallejo Pons. Vugar Gashimov and Alexander Grischuk drew a sharp Poisoned Pawn Najdorf Sicilian which burned out to a drawn ending.

European Chess Solving Championship

The European Chess Solving Championship takes place at the De Vere Sunningdale Park Hotel, at Sunningdale near Windsor on the outskirts of London. The event takes place from Friday April 9th to Monday April 12th, with the main European Championship competitions on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Contact: The ECSC Organiser Paul Valois at paulvalois@yahoo.co.uk or on 0113 2620609, or Ian Watson at ian@irwatson.demon.co.uk or on 07768 847476.

Favourite for the individual is the current European and World Champion Piotr Murdzia from Poland, but solving Grandmasters from Russia, Great Britain, Germany and many others will be keen to unseat him. Poland also hold the team title, but are likely to be outgraded by Russia who should start as favourites. Great Britain, with two former World Champions in their squad, are also expected to contend for the title.

Competitors have to solve chess problems and endgame studies, against the clock, and each round includes orthodox two-, three- and more-movers, as well as selfmates, helpmates and studies. Titles and gradings for chess solving are similar to the over-the-board system, with Grandmasters, International Masters and Fide Masters of solving. Murdzia is currently the highest rated solver with a rating of 2843.
