1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Adolivio Capece, Miklos Orso, Christophe Philippe, Jan Mazuch, Laszlo Nagy, Sean Hewitt, Frank Berry, Mitko Iliev, Janos Rigo, Michael Rahal, Joaquim De Deus Fo, Bill Townsend, Egidijus Zeromskis, Biro Sandor, Tomas Dvorak, and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Veselin Topalov squeaked home by winning a drawn ending against Boris Gelfand in the final round of Linares. Given that Topalov was no doubt playing with one hand tied behind his back with his best opening ideas being saved for his World title challenge against Viswanathan Anand his performance was an unqualified success. Half a point behind (and having a better tie-break he would have won if Topalov hadn't won his final round game) was Alexander Grischuk who sometimes frustrates but is clearly one of the very best in the world at the moment. Elsewhere there has been a huge amount of chess. The World Champion played his final chess before the match by playing two games for Baden-Baden in the Bundesliga. His team actually lost for the first time in three years in probably the strongest ever match in the Bundesliga. Anand's personal tally was a win and a draw. There was a huge amount of chess elsewhere too in a busy week.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Linares 2010

The Linares tournament took place in Spain 12th-25th February 2010. Veselin Topalov emerged as the winner for the first time. He beat Boris Gelfand in the final round and edged out Alexander Grischuk by half a point.

3) FIDE Rating List March 2010

Magnus Carlsen remains top of the FIDE rating list for March 2010. Carlsen gained 3 points from his win in Wijk aan Zee. Veselin Topalov's win in Linares occurred too late to appear in the list (I still don't like the publication of a list that is out of date upon publication) and that would have lifted him extremely close to Carlsen again.

Vladimir Kramnik overtook Viswanathan Anand after a slightly better performance in Wijk aan Zee, but there isn't a lot between them. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov gained 19 points to move up to number 5 in the world, Alexander Grischuk moved from 15 to 7 in the world with more to come from his Linares performance.

Le Quang Liem moved from 93 to 42 after his recent performances in Moscow.

Michael Adams is back as England's number one after overtaking Nigel Short. Radoslaw Wojtaszek is the highest new entry at 70 in the world.

Giovanni Vescovi was the highest casualty dropping out of the list. The rating required to get into the list is still 2643

16) US Amateur Teams East

The U.S. Amateur Team championship celebrated its fortieth anniversary this year, and the latest edition was held over Presidents Day weekend (Feb. 13-15) in four parts of the United States. However the East is where it all started back in 1971, and Team East generally dwarfs the other 3 tournaments in size.

At Team East this year 1,140 players competed in 268 teams - down a little from last year’s total - the record was 1,251 players and 291 teams set in 2008. The terrible weather (AKA the Snowpocalypse) that the southern part of the East Coast was having just before the tournament hurt turnout a bit.

Three teams tied for first with a 5 1/2-1/2 total, with the final places being decided by tiebreak. The winning team was the Cambridge Springers, four players from the Boston area: IM William Kelleher, Joseph Fang, Leonard Morrissey and Anatoly Levin. The Springers have been regulars at this tournament for many years and have always been one of the highest rated teams, but they’ve never managed to win - until now. The other two teams with 5 1/2 both featured younger players: Hunter High School and Our Weiner is Looking to Mate.

The Amateur Teams are kind of an odd event. The entry fees are low, and the only prizes won are clocks and trophies, but still many strong players turn out. For example, several grandmasters were in attendance, among them Arthur Bisguier, Alex Lenderman, Robert Hess, Semion Palatnik, Leonid Yudasin, as well as dozens of IMs and FMs. It may seem odd to see all these professional players at an amateur event, but so long as each four player team has an average rating below 2,200 USCF, anyone can play.

The tournament was organized by Steve Doyle for the New Jersey State Chess Federation.

Report: Bill Townsend.

European Chess Solving Championship

The European Chess Solving Championship takes place at the De Vere Sunningdale Park Hotel, at Sunningdale near Windsor on the outskirts of London. The event takes place from Friday April 9th to Monday April 12th, with the main European Championship competitions on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Contact: The ECSC Organiser Paul Valois at paulvalois@yahoo.co.uk or on 0113 2620609, or Ian Watson at ian@irwatson.demon.co.uk or on 07768 847476.

Favourite for the individual is the current European and World Champion Piotr Murdzia from Poland, but solving Grandmasters from Russia, Great Britain, Germany and many others will be keen to unseat him. Poland also hold the team title, but are likely to be outgraded by Russia who should start as favourites. Great Britain, with two former World Champions in their squad, are also expected to contend for the title.

Competitors have to solve chess problems and endgame studies, against the clock, and each round includes orthodox two-, three- and more-movers, as well as selfmates, helpmates and studies. Titles and gradings for chess solving are similar to the over-the-board system, with Grandmasters, International Masters and Fide Masters of solving. Murdzia is currently the highest rated solver with a rating of 2843.
