1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Miklos Orso, Adolivio Capece, Md. Haroon Or Rashid, David Holt, Etienne Van Leeuwen, Paul Depaepe, Richard Forster, Mikhail Golubev, Nigel Freeman, Richard Reich, Victor Mikhalevski and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another very busy week of chess saw the start of the Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament which sees many of the top players in the world compete. The start saw the favourite, Magnus Carlsen, lose 2-0 against Vassily Ivanchuk in the first round and then complete two whitewashes himself. There is usually a fair share of interesting games in this tournament with no rating points at stake so there is plenty to look forward to. The European Individual Championships are coming towards a conclusion with just two rounds to go. The mercurial Ian Nepomniachtchi leads with 7.5/9. Elsewhere Anatoly Karpov has announced his candidacy for the FIDE Presidency. However his challenge may not get off the starting blocks if he doesn't get the nomination of the Russian Chess Federation, who might be expected to endorse the current president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

2) Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament

The 19th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament takes place at the Palais de la Mediterranée, a legendary hotel on the world-famous Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France, March 12th-25th 2010. The event is organized by the Association Max Euwe of chess maecenas Joop van Oosterom, which is based in Monaco. The new number one in the world rankings, Magnus Carlsen, is the top-seed in Nice. Also present are Levon Aronian, the winner of the past two Amber tournaments, and Vladimir Kramnik, who won the Amber tournament a record six times.

Official site: http://www.amberchess2010.com/

Round 1 saw Vassily Ivanchuk defeat World Number One Magnus Carlsen 2-0. Ruslan Ponomariov beat Boris Gelfand by the same score. All the blindfold games were decisive.

Round 2 saw Magnus Carlsen return to 50% with a 2-0 win against Levon Aronian, Vassily Ivanchuk and Ruslan Ponomariov drew both their games against Svidler and Grischuk respectively which leaves them on 3/4. Svidler and Kramnik are half a point behind this.

Round 3. Magnus Carlsen won 2-0 for a second day in a row, this time against Peter Svidler. Vassily Ivanchuk retains the over-all lead with 4.5/6 and also leads the blindfold competition. Kramnik leads the rapid with 2.5/3.

12) OGASA Rector’s Cup

On 11 March 2010 in an event, devoted to 85th birthday of Grandmaster Efim Geller (1925-1998), the chess team of Odessa journalists played against the team of the Odessa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (OGASA).

IM Vladimir Makarov of OGASA played a simul against five journalists while the captain of the journalists’ team, GM Mikhail Golubev was giving a simul to the OGASA players. The time control for IM Makarov and GM Golubev was1 hour 15 minutes for each game, and their opponents had 45 minutes for the game. Makarov won his simul with a score +4 =1, Golubev won his simul with a score +2 =3. So the overall score was: OGASA 6 - Journalists 4.

The OGASA team also won a blitz match with a score 9,5 - 3,5. Grandmasters Vladimir Tukmakov and Viacheslav Eingorn participated in the opening ceremony, which was headed by the Rector of the Academy, Prof. Vitaliy Dorofeev. More details about the event in Russian can be found at http://chessportal.od.ua

13) Karpov to stand for FIDE President

Anatoly Karpov has announced his intention to stand for the post of FIDE President the elections for which are during the General Assembly of the FIDE Congress which take place during the 39th Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk (September 19th - October 4th 2010). This announcement took place during an extraordinary meeting of the European Chess Union (ECU) on March 13th 2010.

Karpov has been officially nominated by the French Chess Federation as confirmed by Jean-Claude Moingt in the Europe-Echecs video. As far as I'm aware Karpov isn't a member of the French Chess Federation and I believe he will need the nomination of the Russian Chess Federation to stand as will current FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. Karpov noted that there were difficulties because two Russian Candidates wanted to stand but the Russian Federation can only nominate one. It is also the case that candidates need the support of their own federation to run (there is some wiggle room this "stipulation may be waived by the General Assembly only in exceptional cases") so someone is going to have a lot of problems when the Russians take their decision. Karpov seemed to imply that if he got the nomination Ilyumzhinov would probably run anyhow "FIDE can do whatever they want, they don't respect their own regulations and rules." although he didn't say anything about his own plans if he didn't get the nomination.

Europe Echecs Video Interview with Karpov and also with Danailov and Yazici.

Karpov says that FIDE should promote the current players better otherwise Kasparov, Fischer and Karpov would remain the most famous players to the wider public rather than Topalov, Anand and younger stars such as Carlsen and Nakamura. Also that the profile of the game as a whole needed to be raised and the game should be promoted in schools.

Karpov criticised Georgios Makropoulos, Zurab Azmaiparashvili even the president Kirsan Iljumzhinov of making money where the players are not.

He wants to reverse the fall in the prestige of chess. Like everyone he wants to promote chess in schools (that's a given with almost everyone in chess at the moment)

Change for the World Championship system.

The European Chess Union is also to see a Presidential Election at Khanty Mansiysk just before the FIDE Congress and Presidential election.

Candidates are: Ali Nihat Yazici (who announced his plan to run at Novi-Sad 5 months ago and has been in dispute with the current leadership)

Silvio Danailov (his campaign slogan "I know...") who has the support of the Bulgarian Chess Federation.

Yazici implied that he expected the president for the last 12 years Boris Kutin to stand and that there would be an additional western candidate who hadn't yet made an announcement (see: http://www.europe-echecs.com/).

Some relevant regulations

1.2 Nominations for the Presidential ticket and Continental Presidents must reach the FIDE Secretariat at least three months before the opening of the General Assembly. To be elected, each candidate shall be nominated by his federation. He/She should have been a member of their federation at least one year before the General Assembly.

No person can be elected to a FIDE-office against the will of his national federation. This stipulation may be waived by the General Assembly only in exceptional cases. Federations that are against the nomination of one of their members for a FIDE office, should raise their objections to such a nomination before the election.

A Federation is entitled to nominate only one candidate for one position

European Chess Solving Championship

The European Chess Solving Championship takes place at the De Vere Sunningdale Park Hotel, at Sunningdale near Windsor on the outskirts of London. The event takes place from Friday April 9th to Monday April 12th, with the main European Championship competitions on the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Favourite for the individual is the current European and World Champion Piotr Murdzia from Poland, but solving Grandmasters from Russia, Great Britain, Germany and many others will be keen to unseat him. Poland also hold the team title, but are likely to be outgraded by Russia who should start as favourites. Great Britain, with two former World Champions in their squad, are also expected to contend for the title.

Competitors have to solve chess problems and endgame studies, against the clock, and each round includes orthodox two-, three- and more-movers, as well as selfmates, helpmates and studies. Titles and gradings for chess solving are similar to the over-the-board system, with Grandmasters, International Masters and Fide Masters of solving. Murdzia is currently the highest rated solver with a rating of 2843.
