1) Introduction

My thanks to Zenon Franco Ocampos, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, David Cohen, Miklos Orso, Adolivio Capece, Gujuan Tzu, Erik Malmsten, Radu-Catalin Chirila, Mitko Iliev, Petr Pisk, Jeroen van den Berg, Sandor Videki, Michal Krasenkow, Beatriz Marinello, Mark Adams, George Mirijanian and everyone else who helped with the issue.

More great chess this week. The Poikovsky tournament continues with Dmitry Jakovenko and Alexander Riazantsev lead with 4/6 at just over the half way stage. Boris Gelfand came from behind to beat Levon Aronian of the final of the Leon Rapid Tournament over the weekend. There have been Team Events in France, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina and China. So plenty of chess to look at. I've tried to avoid chess politics as much as possible in recent years mostly because it is so utterly depressing. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has released his ticket and programme for the elections later in the year. There is much to take issue with but his point that "The unity of the chess world, achieved during my presidency, is now in danger." is the most contentious to me. There has never been unity, only the unity of the people left supporting someone who should always have been utterly unacceptable as a leader at any point. It's 15 years and counting now, even his supporters should ask the question, if Ilyumzhinov retains the presidency, when exactly is the right time for him to go? He is only 48 now, another 20 years? You can be sure he won't go of his own accord. The endorsement of the chess world is by extension an endorsement of his record in Kalmykia also, I fail to see how you could seriously examine that and feel at all comfortable at his presidency of FIDE.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

9) Mitropa Cup

The Mitropa Cup took place in Chur 29th May - 6th June 2010. Italy took first place in both the men's and women's events.

Adolivio Capece reports: A wonderful result for Italy in Mitropa Cup 2010 (Chur, Switzerland) Italy won both the male and female tournament. The women team (wgm/im Elena Sedina, wgm/im Olga Zimina, wim Marina Brunello) got 3 team points of advantage 3 rounds before the end; they was matematically sure of the gold medal already at the end of the penultimate round! The men team (gm Caruana, gm Godena, gm Vocaturo, im S. Brunello, im D. Rombaldoni) had to sufffer owing to the great performance of Hungary. After losing against Switzerland in the 3rd round, Hungary won all the matches in a row up the 7th round when had to fight against Italy. The italian team in the meanwhile make a draw against Germany and won all the other matches, so that the standing before the direct match saw Italy ahead for 1 point. The match ended really after a great fight and the result was 2-2. In the last round Italy draw the match (without playing) against Switzerland, but Hungary was not able to win against Slovakia (they only draw 2-2). So Italy won the Cup with one full (team) point of advantage on Hungary. Gm Caruana, gm Vocaturo and wgm/im Zimina got the prize for the best performance. Gm caruana made also the best individual result

33) Potential legal cases (Chessbase and Karpov)

Two potential legal cases may or may not reach courts in the near future. The organisers of the World Championship in Sofia are said to be taking action against ChessBase on the strictly limited idea that you can't dynamically take content from a website and sell it for profit.

Incidently as I was producing this article here is an article from complete outsiders to chess but insiders to technology: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100604/1516129698.shtml

The next is that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is planning to take Anatoly Karpov to the FIDE Ethics Commission over saying he was corrupt. Well I don't know the rules of this commission but I highly doubt Karpov will be scared. The article also says he is taking it to court in Russia, whilst Karpov may be on trial Ilyumzhinov will also have to take the stand and I highly doubt he would enjoy that very much. Looks like a completely empty threat on his behalf.

One of the interesting things is what comments Ilyumzhinov is referring to precisely as Karpov has apparently been quite circumspect on the accusations he has made. Ilyumzhinov seems to be making the point about FIDE internal finances not being corrupt, Karpov doesn't appear to have made any accusations about that.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has announced his presidential ticket. In the announcement he claims the support of 35 countries including Russia which is also claimed by Karpov. He also says that Ignatius Leong is back on his ticket as General Secretary. Leong had announced only very recently that he was standing down in a press release sent to many chess outlets including to me.

35) Prize Money for the Olympiad

FIDE have announced that for the first time there will be prize money for the winners at the FIDE Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk. Whilst welcoming the idea of money for teams Michal Krasenkow has some objections to the idea of individuals receiving money because of the potential conflict with the team ethic.

Open letter to FIDE and the organizers of the Khanty-Mansiysk Chess Olympiad

Dear chess friends,

Sorry for this format of an open letter. I am not against anyone and don't want to criticize anyone - please don't be offended. However, I think the matter is extremely urgent. The Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk can be completely ruined. I think the organizers wanted to make an excellent thing funding money prizes for individual results but they probably didn't quite catch the devastating effect on the team competition this move can bring.

I kindly ask FIDE and the organizers to urgently reconsider this decision. See the explanation and details in the following letter.

Board prizes at the Chess Olympiad.

I have just seen the news of the money prizes founded for the best results at the Khanty-Mansiysk Chess Olympiad this year. The news is partly excellent but partly, alas, sad and devastating.

The team money prizes is the excellent part of the news. The best squads deserve to get rewards for their successful effort! And parity of men's and women's prizes is an absolutely just idea!

However, as as experienced participant and occasional team captain at Chess Olympiads and European Team Championships, I am extremely concerned about the individual money prizes. They can ruin performances of many strong teams and lead to pressure and conflicts within the squads.

For many years we had a similar situation in the Polish national team, when individual board medals were rewarded with government prizes and stipends. That led to the situation of players with good percentage scores (which guaranteed them medals) being not interested in playing in subsequent matches as they could just lose money! As they were the strongest points of the team, that led to tremendous problems. Even if the players were convinced or forced to play, they couldn't play normally, usually lost and spoiled their individual and the team's results. The most spectacular story happened at the European Team Championship in 1999, when GM Robert Kempinski was going to win his board (and government stipend) with 2 rounds to go. But at the same moment our team was sharing the 2nd place. Being the playing captain of the team, I convinced him to play. Both Kempinski (who played extremely nervously) and our team terribly lost in the penultimate round. Subsequently I had to withdraw Robert from the last round, saving the bronze board medal and the stipend for him but "sacrificing" our team result altogether (finally Poland ended up on the 17th place). With high money prizes for individual board results such situations will become typical for many teams!

Therefore I kindly ask FIDE and the organizers of the Olympiad to reconsider their decision.

The best solution would be to cancel individual money prizes (including the rating performance prizes) and increase the number of team prizes.

If the organizers insist on rewarding individual results, then the sytem of awarding medals and prizes should be definitely changed, i.e. point scores, and not percentage scores, should be counted for the board rankings. That would encourage players to play more games and score more points. A similar system was successfully used in the Polish league. Although, taking into consideration the high value of the prizes, cheating and pre-arranged results can still be possible.

As for the performance rating prizes, I don't see any way to eliminate their devastating effect on team results, and such prizes should be definitely cancelled.

I am sure team captains and federation activists from many countries will back this appeal.

Kind regards,

Michal Krasenkow, Grandmaster (Poland)

36) London Chess Classic 2010

Viswanathan Anand will become the first reigning world chess champion to play in a major tournament in London since Anatoly Karpov in 1984 when he joins the eight-player field for the second London Chess Classic, which runs from 8-15 December 2010 at the Olympia Conference Centre.

Alongside him will be World Number one Magnus Carlsen, former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik, US number one Hikaru Nakamura and the top four English players Michael Adams, Nigel Short, Luke McShane and David Howell.

IM Malcolm Pein is back as tournament director.

Vishy Anand is the one change from the stellar field which brought spectators flocking to London to watch elite chess in December 2009. The great Indian player, who will turn 41 during the tournament, recently retained his title as the undisputed champion of the world by defeating Veselin Topalov in the latter’s home city of Sofia, Bulgaria. In London he will meet his immediate predecessor as champion, Vladimir Kramnik, 36, of Russia, and also the young man who is currently riding high as the world’s highest rated player and widely tipped to be Anand’s next challenger – Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who will be 20 by the time the tournament starts.

London is thus privileged to witness a clash of the past, present and likely future chess champions. At the time of writing Carlsen is world number one on the FIDE (World Chess Federation) Rating List, Kramnik is number three and Anand number four. Looking forward, London is also bidding to host the 2012 World Championship title match, so Anand’s clashes with Carlsen and Kramnik could well be a preview of what happens in London’s Olympic year.

Five more players make up the field of eight, all of whom played in the exciting 2009 event. Each one earned his place for his fighting play last year. The fourth non-British player is Hikaru Nakamura, USA, who will turn 23 during the London event. The American is known as the ‘H-Bomb’ for his explosive and totally uncompromising style of play. He has won the US Championship twice and also won major events in San Sebastian and Gibraltar in the past couple of years. He is improving all the time and can be expected to press hard for wins against the leading trio of players.

England has an established quartet of elite players and all four will be playing in London. Michael Adams, 39, from Cornwall, has recently wrested back his position as England number one and he spent a number of years as the world number four. He is fresh from winning the prestigious Gibraltar International. Nigel Short, 45, became a chess legend when he broke the Kasparov-Karpov strangehold on world title matches, beating Anatoly Karpov on the way to a title match with Garry Kasparov in 1993. He is still one of the most entertaining players on the circuit – and not to be missed in the commentary room after the game! Luke McShane, 26, started a financial career after university but couldn’t resist the lure of the international chess scene. He is now re-establishing his status as one of the most talented of the world’s young grandmasters. David Howell, 20 in November, had a sensational elite tournament debut in this event last year when he finished third behind Carlsen and Kramnik.
