1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Luis Blasco de la Cruz, Mitko Iliev, Zenon Franco Ocampos, Dave Clayton, Denis Gauthier, Dennis Monokroussos, Emil Sutovsky, Etienne Van Leeuwen, Oscar de la Riva Aguado, Guven Manay, Harald Grafenhofer, Harun Taner, Jan Bey, Lennarth Eriksson, Mark Adams, Mikhail Golubev, Laszlo Nagy, Per Erik Hoem, Peter Boel, Peter Long, Yuri Vovk and everyone else who helped with the issue.

5000 games this week. There is a bewildering amount of chess going on at the moment. The main event was the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess-Meeting. Ruslan Ponomariov scored his best win since his FIDE World Title in 2002. He was a point clear of Le Quang Liem who had a very impressive debut at this level. The 19 year-old looks to have a tremendous future. The future of chess is also being seen in Biel. Many of the players there will expect to be the elite of the future. Fabiano Caruana leads with 4.5/7 with a couple of rounds to go. Alexander Morozevich has returned to chess in a tournament in Pamplona. Its a bit early to say how he is playing but 2.5/3 isn't bad, although the opposition isn't really that strong. The games just keep on coming leaving me almost over-whelmed but just about got there this week.

Just as I write the news comes from the FIDE Presidential Board in Tromso that the Candidates will be moved from Baku in Azerbaijan to Kazan in Russia. The full implications of this decision are hard to read. It isn't difficult to see this as part of a wider pattern which took in the desperation of the Russian Federation to nominate Ilyumzhinov and the upcoming contract with "Chess Lane" that seems likely to pass all FIDE Commercial activities to a Russian Company funded by the shadowy figures of the brothers Ziyavudine and Mohammed Magomedov from Dagestan and represented by their frontman David Kaplan. (Background in Russian in this article on the APN website: A Revolution is coming in the Chess World

Indeed where the money is coming from for this move to Kazan is a mystery. The main immediate problem is the Veselin Topalov this week has said he would refuse to play Candidates events in Russia especially against Russian (only Kramnik is playing) opponents. He must have known this deal was likely so the ball is in his court. He isn't certain to play Kramnik by any means. Mamedyarov does retain his position in the Candidates as the Azerbaijani representative.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Dortmund 2010

The Sparkassen Chess-Meeting in Dortmund took place 15th - 25th July 2010. Former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik was the top seed. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Ruslan Ponomariov, Peter Leko, Arkadij Naiditsch and the winner of the Aeroflot Open Le Quang Liem competed.

Ruslan Ponomariov won the tournament by a point from up and coming star Le Quang Liem. Vladimir Kramnik got back to 50% and caught Mamedyarov by beating him in the final round. Peter Leko scored his only win to catch Naidtisch in last place.

Tigran Nalbandian edged out Thomas Henrichs and Mikhail Zaitsev on tie-break after all finished on 7/9. in the Open A tournament.

5) US Women and Junior Championships 2010

The US Women and Junior Championships 2010 took place in St Louis 10th-20th July 2010. Irina Krush regained the women's title she last won in 2008. She edged out her rival Anna Zatonskih, these two look set to battle it out for this title for many years (indeed they have won all titles since 2006). Zatonskih won the title in a chaotic blitz playoff two years ago which makes the case against using blitz chess to decide important events more than any other. This kind of playoff looked likely this year but was avoided when Zatonskih couldn't match Krush's win in the final round. Parker Zhao looked likely to win the Juniors after favourite Ray Robson lost in the final round but in the end he failed to win a winning endgame and three players played off on Tuesday. Sam Shankland beat Zhao and then Ray Robson to take the title. Shankland has had some tough times recently making a living and has talked about retiring. Winning this qualifies him for next year's US Chess Championship and the World Juniors. He says it is unlikely he will play the World Juniors as he has other commitments.

27) Leiden Chess Festival

The 4th Leiden Chess Tournament took place 8th-18th July 2010. Predrag Nikolic edged out Sergei Tiviakov and Eelke Wiersma on tie-break after all finished on 7/9. Former clear leader Erik van den Doel collapsed to losses against Tiviakov and Wiersma in the final two rounds and finished half a point further back. Akrawi vs Damen won the spectacular game prize. A small number of extra games are in the PGN section plus a couple of name corrections. My thanks to Jan Bey.

49) Editor of Chess Informant Zdenko Krnic dies at the age of 62

International Master Zdenko Krnic born 2nd October 1947 has died at the age of 62 on July 23rd 2010. He was the Editor in Chief of Chess Informant.

He suffered injuries from a traffic accident whilst traveling home from his work on July 16th 2010.

This is very sad news. On a personal note I actually was fortunate to play him in the Donner Memorial Journalist's Tournament of 1996 when he tied for first with Malcolm Pein.

Chess Informant: http://www.sahovski.com has a short Posting on Zdenko Krnic.

50) Russian Chess Federation ask for World Title Changes

According to a report in kommersant the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) in two letters signed by presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich has written to FIDE asking for significant changes to the next World Championship cycle both for Men and Women.

Nor are they the only critics. Emil Sutovsky has proposed Changes to the current Candidates cycle. He wishes to separate the Final of the Candidates from the Quarter and Semi-Final stages.

Veselin Topalov has made it clear that he objects to playing in Russia at all, but most particularly if he is to play an Russian opponent (in this case Kramnik is the only Russian in the event). http://letters.chessdom.com/topalov-candidate-matches

51) FIDE concerned about pace of Olympiad preparations

FIDE Vice-President Israel Gelfer has visited Khanty-Mansiysk to check on the preparation for the 39th Chess Olympiad in September. The players hotel is heading towards completion but there are concerns about progress on the logistics for the event.

The venue is the "Olympic" Hotel complex. An external auditor has expressed concern about the lack of a contract with a service company responsible for looking after the atheletes.

The head of the organizing committee Nikolai Bondarev explains this by saying that in fact the hotel was not yet ready for operation. Alexander Gerber director of the Olympiad says the they can't wait for the hotel's opening on September 1st. He says the logistics of catering and contracts for food can't be settled in 20 days.

Gelfer says that through Kirsan Ilyumzhinov he hopes that the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will put pressure on the regions Governor and everything will be sorted out next week.

Building work on the hotel has been frenetic. Although the hotel looks spectacular, and big enough for the 1600 participants there is still obviously a lot more work to do. The rooms are nice but obviously not the 4 stars initially promised, the dining hall can only contain 600 people.

Paignton Congress

This year's week-long Paignton Congress starts on Sunday September 5th, the 60th consecutive congress held in the same room, the magnificent Ballroom of Oldway Mansion. This record of consistency is probably unique in chess.

To commemorate this milestone, the committee has planned several extra features. Michael Adams is coming to put on a simultaneous display, and there will be a Junior International tournament held in the Mayor's Parlour.

In addition, Committee Member, Bob Jones, is publishing a book on the history of the event, which was won spectacularly by Harry Golombek after he beat the former World Champion, Max Euwe, on the very first day of the first congress. Since that day, many top players have tested the Paignton waters; from the likes of Barden, Wade, Yanofsky, Alexander and Clarke in the early days, to youngsters like Keene, Hartston, Adams, Hodgson, Norwood, Arkell, the list goes on.

Details can be found on the chessdevon website, or obtained from the Congress Secretary, Alan Crickmore on 01752-768206.

London Chess Classic 2010

Viswanathan Anand will become the first reigning world chess champion to play in a major tournament in London since Anatoly Karpov in 1984 when he joins the eight-player field for the second London Chess Classic, which runs from 8-15 December 2010 at the Olympia Conference Centre.

Alongside him will be World Number one Magnus Carlsen, former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik, US number one Hikaru Nakamura and the top four English players Michael Adams, Nigel Short, Luke McShane and David Howell.

IM Malcolm Pein is back as tournament director.

Vishy Anand is the one change from the stellar field which brought spectators flocking to London to watch elite chess in December 2009. The great Indian player, who will turn 41 during the tournament, recently retained his title as the undisputed champion of the world by defeating Veselin Topalov in the latter's home city of Sofia, Bulgaria. In London he will meet his immediate predecessor as champion, Vladimir Kramnik, 36, of Russia, and also the young man who is currently riding high as the world's highest rated player and widely tipped to be Anand's next challenger – Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who will be 20 by the time the tournament starts.

London is thus privileged to witness a clash of the past, present and likely future chess champions. At the time of writing Carlsen is world number one on the FIDE (World Chess Federation) Rating List, Kramnik is number three and Anand number four. Looking forward, London is also bidding to host the 2012 World Championship title match, so Anand's clashes with Carlsen and Kramnik could well be a preview of what happens in London's Olympic year.

Five more players make up the field of eight, all of whom played in the exciting 2009 event. Each one earned his place for his fighting play last year. The fourth non-British player is Hikaru Nakamura, USA, who will turn 23 during the London event. The American is known as the 'H-Bomb' for his explosive and totally uncompromising style of play. He has won the US Championship twice and also won major events in San Sebastian and Gibraltar in the past couple of years. He is improving all the time and can be expected to press hard for wins against the leading trio of players.

England has an established quartet of elite players and all four will be playing in London. Michael Adams, 39, from Cornwall, has recently wrested back his position as England number one and he spent a number of years as the world number four. He is fresh from winning the prestigious Gibraltar International. Nigel Short, 45, became a chess legend when he broke the Kasparov-Karpov strangehold on world title matches, beating Anatoly Karpov on the way to a title match with Garry Kasparov in 1993. He is still one of the most entertaining players on the circuit – and not to be missed in the commentary room after the game! Luke McShane, 26, started a financial career after university but couldn't resist the lure of the international chess scene. He is now re-establishing his status as one of the most talented of the world's young grandmasters. David Howell, 20 in November, had a sensational elite tournament debut in this event last year when he finished third behind Carlsen and Kramnik. He had recently won the British Championship by a handsome margin and has subsequently shared first at Hastings and won the British Rapidplay Championship for the second year in succession.
