1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Luis Blasco de la Cruz, Sandor Videki, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Mikhail Golubev, and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Youth weakened slightly towards the end but nevertheless won 26-24 against Experience in the NH Chess Tournament. One might be forgiven for saying that the real battle was between Anish Giri and Hikaru Nakamura for a place in next year's Amber tournament. Giri's great tournament performance was spoiled by a final round loss to Peter Heine Nielsen which allowed Nakamura to catch him. A match with a blitz timerate of 3 minutes and an increment of 2 seconds per move between Nakamura and Giri took place which was not surprisingly won by Nakamura. I have the feeling that a World Championship at that timerate might also be won by Nakamura. 16 year old Giri is 8th in the FIDE list of Juniors (and who really counts Carlsen, Karjakin, Vachier, Caruana as "Juniors" anyhow!) and rising fast, an Amber invitation might be in the post in any event. Ljubo who I mentioned last week performed to his rating, I still think it would be nice if he played a bit more than once a year.

The Spanish team Championships has some elite players to follow, Kamsky is in Baku playing their open, Naiditsch beat Efimenko, husband and wife team of Laurent Fressinet and Almira Skripchenko won the French men's and women's titles and the summer opens continue. Not to be too ungrateful for lots of chess, I'll be glad for some more normal weeks of chess that come when people go back to work.

One of my computers failed a couple of days ago so it is possible I missed events of which I was sent news that were stored on that computer (hopeful of an inexpensive cure tomorrow!). I'm viewing this magazine in a much more attractive format that you are. I had a design on my failed computer and have quickly knocked up another one on this, my computing skills are unrecognisable even from 12 months ago when I was having a near nervous breakdown getting the Content Management System up and running. This magazine section will look a lot nicer very soon when I decide what to go for and this will be a test for the reworking of the front page of TWIC too. I don't want to go through several versions over a few weeks. I can officially say that the style sheet I'm using right now isn't very good.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) NH Chess Tournament

The 5th NH Chess Rising Stars vs Experience Tournament took place in Amsterdam 12th-22nd August 2010. The experienced Gelfand, Svidler, PH Nielsen, Van Wely and Ljubojevic took on the Rising Stars of Nakamura, Caruana, Wesley So, Giri and Howell. The tournament finished with the Youth side defeating the Experience 26-24. Boris Gelfand scored 7/10 for the Experience team. Anish Giri lost his final game to allow Hikaru Nakamura to catch him on 6/10. The two had a play-off for a place in next year's Amber tournament. The blitz playoff with a time rate of 3m+2spm saw Nakamura win with a 2-0 score. It wouldn't really surprise me if Giri gets an invitation anyway.

Rather embarrassingly I got the edition wrong not only in TWIC last week but in fact for the whole event last year! This year's was the 5th and you should re-label last year's if you have a database from TWIC.

6) French Championships

The French Championships took place in Belfort 9th-21st August 2010. Etienne Bacrot and Laurent Fressinet were the top seeds. Almira Skripchenko won the women's group and Jean-Pierre Le Roux the B-Group. Romain Edouard and Laurent Fressinet played off for the title on Saturday after topping the men's event with 8/11. Fressinet took the title by winning the second rapid game. Fressinet and Skripchenko are married so this gave an unusual husband and wife win.

8) Sants Open

The Sants Open takes place in La Bordeta, Barcelona 20th-29th August 2010.

A small observation, even with Wikipedea I am really confused as to why the organisers seem to cram so many places in the title of their tournament (Sants, La Bordeta and Hostafrancs, they put Barcelona as the venue in chess-results). The tournament is in "La Bordeta" which according to Wikipedea "is a neighborhood in the Sants-Montjuic district of Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain). It is located between Sants and l'Hospitalet de Llobregat. The neighborhood was in the bottom of the former municipality of Sants." Quite what this has to do with Hostafrancs is anyone's guess. I'm sticking with La Bordeta this time as being the most specific even though I've given Barcelona in the past. Sants Open in La Bordeta is surely enough to work everthing out.

Paignton Congress

This year's week-long Paignton Congress starts on Sunday September 5th, the 60th consecutive congress held in the same room, the magnificent Ballroom of Oldway Mansion. This record of consistency is probably unique in chess.

To commemorate this milestone, the committee has planned several extra features. Michael Adams is coming to put on a simultaneous display, and there will be a Junior International tournament held in the Mayor's Parlour.

In addition, Committee Member, Bob Jones, is publishing a book on the history of the event, which was won spectacularly by Harry Golombek after he beat the former World Champion, Max Euwe, on the very first day of the first congress. Since that day, many top players have tested the Paignton waters; from the likes of Barden, Wade, Yanofsky, Alexander and Clarke in the early days, to youngsters like Keene, Hartston, Adams, Hodgson, Norwood, Arkell, the list goes on.

Details can be found on the chessdevon website, or obtained from the Congress Secretary, Alan Crickmore on 01752-768206.

London Chess Classic 2010

Viswanathan Anand will become the first reigning world chess champion to play in a major tournament in London since Anatoly Karpov in 1984 when he joins the eight-player field for the second London Chess Classic, which runs from 8-15 December 2010 at the Olympia Conference Centre.

Alongside him will be World Number one Magnus Carlsen, former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik, US number one Hikaru Nakamura and the top four English players Michael Adams, Nigel Short, Luke McShane and David Howell.

IM Malcolm Pein is back as tournament director.

Vishy Anand is the one change from the stellar field which brought spectators flocking to London to watch elite chess in December 2009. The great Indian player, who will turn 41 during the tournament, recently retained his title as the undisputed champion of the world by defeating Veselin Topalov in the latter's home city of Sofia, Bulgaria. In London he will meet his immediate predecessor as champion, Vladimir Kramnik, 36, of Russia, and also the young man who is currently riding high as the world's highest rated player and widely tipped to be Anand's next challenger - Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who will be 20 by the time the tournament starts.

London is thus privileged to witness a clash of the past, present and likely future chess champions. At the time of writing Carlsen is world number one on the FIDE (World Chess Federation) Rating List, Kramnik is number three and Anand number four. Looking forward, London is also bidding to host the 2012 World Championship title match, so Anand's clashes with Carlsen and Kramnik could well be a preview of what happens in London's Olympic year.

Five more players make up the field of eight, all of whom played in the exciting 2009 event. Each one earned his place for his fighting play last year. The fourth non-British player is Hikaru Nakamura, USA, who will turn 23 during the London event. The American is known as the 'H-Bomb' for his explosive and totally uncompromising style of play. He has won the US Championship twice and also won major events in San Sebastian and Gibraltar in the past couple of years. He is improving all the time and can be expected to press hard for wins against the leading trio of players.

England has an established quartet of elite players and all four will be playing in London. Michael Adams, 39, from Cornwall, has recently wrested back his position as England number one and he spent a number of years as the world number four. He is fresh from winning the prestigious Gibraltar International. Nigel Short, 45, became a chess legend when he broke the Kasparov-Karpov strangehold on world title matches, beating Anatoly Karpov on the way to a title match with Garry Kasparov in 1993. He is still one of the most entertaining players on the circuit - and not to be missed in the commentary room after the game! Luke McShane, 26, started a financial career after university but couldn't resist the lure of the international chess scene. He is now re-establishing his status as one of the most talented of the world's young grandmasters. David Howell, 20 in November, had a sensational elite tournament debut in this event last year when he finished third behind Carlsen and Kramnik. He had recently won the British Championship by a handsome margin and has subsequently shared first at Hastings and won the British Rapidplay Championship for the second year in succession.
