1) Introduction

My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Luis Blasco de la Cruz, Adolivio Capece, Dave Clayton, Paulo Rocha, Richard Palliser, Zenon Franco Ocampos, Kopylov Michael, Holger Lieske, Jack Peters, Antonio Rosino, Arthur Brameld, George Mirijanian and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another busy week of chess. The World Blitz Championships in Moscow once again confirmed that the hot player of the moment is Levon Aronian. He edged out Teimour Radjabov and Magnus Carlsen, only a point separated the three of them. On the other side of the World Judit Polgar beat Vassily Ivanchuk and Veselin Topalov to win the first Ajedrez UNAM Quadrangular tournament in Mexico. Elsewhere there is almost too much else to mention including the Cultural Village tournament that will provide two players for Wijk aan Zee in January, the British Rapidplay, the Russian Women's Championship, the Asian Games, Czech Coal tournament and on and on. Next week should be a bit quieter, although the 6th Femida Cup a team event including Ruslan Ponomariov, the Italian Championship starring Fabiano Caruana, Vasylyshyn Memorial and Belgrade Trophy are amongst those that do start next week.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) VI World Blitz 2010

The VI World Blitz took place in Moscow 16th-18th November 2010 (14 rounds the first two days, 10 the last). It followed directly on from the Tal Memorial. Magnus Carlsen competed as did all the players (except Shirov) from the Memorial making it a very strong event. Levon Aronian continued his hot form and took clear first place with 24.5/38 half a point clear of Temour Radjabov who was a further half point clear of defending champion Magnus Carlsen. Sadly the gamescores in many cases aren't complete. Some gamescores have been recovered by members of the public from the videos on youtube. It shouldn't have been beyond the oraganisers ability to do this themselves for all the games. After all it must have cost quite a bit to assemble this field, a budget for a complete bulletin should have been part of their plans.

3) Ajedrez Unam Quadrangular 2010

The Ajedrez UNAM Quadrangular tournament took place alongside the Ibero-American tournament. This was part of a huge chess festival which had Kasparov and Karpov giving simuls, and there were in addition a number of seminars and exhibitions. Judit Polgar won the whole event. She recovered from a loss in game one to beat Vassily Ivanchuk on Day 1 2.5-1.5.Veselin Topalov made very light work of Manuel Leon-Hoyos in the second semi-final on day 2 winning 3.5-0.5. In the final Polgar scored a crushing victory against Topalov. Game one was drawn, the game score seems garbled either that or at the end Polgar missed some mates in one (maybe if Judit or Veselin is reading this they can send me the real game, I think this may be the only way this game may be recovered). After that she realed off three wins in a row including a final King's Gambit for a 3.5-0.5 victory. A great result for Polgar who seems to be rediscovering her touch. For Topalov it is a continuation of poor recent form but it seems that he has just married and isn't really working on his chess at the moment but just enjoying his life and for that one can hardly blame him. There is also good news. There will be a second event next year.

4) III Iberoamerican Championships 2010

The Iberoamerican Championships saw players from Spain and Portugal take on players from South America in a two stage tournament. A qualifying group stage was followed by a knockout amongst the top finishers in each group. The rest joined the 7 round open which took place 18th-21st November 2010 and was won by Zenon Franco Ocampos who scored 6.5/7 beating Granda Zuniga and Gonazez Zomara in the final rounds. The final saw Gilberto Milos defeat Marc Narciso-Dublan after losing the first game. He levelled winning game two and then took the blitz playoff 1.5-0.5. The third - fourth playoff between Eduardo Iturrizaga (who won the first game) and Ruben Felgaer saw Iturrizaga defaulted after he arrived over an hour late to game two. There was zero tolerance and he wasn't even given the chanced to recover in a blitz playoff, which was scheduled to start 10 minutes after the conclusion of game two, rough and it seems to me zero tolerance has to go.

9) 16th Asian Games 2010

The 16th Asian Games is a huge sporting event. There are events for men and women in the chess section. The rapid event is now over Rustam Kasimdzhanov won the men's and Hou Yifan the women's. The Team events are now under way. It may be that this turns out to be the model for the format of any appearance chess might make in the Olympic games (most likely the Winter Olympics) and could be hugely important for the financing of chess in individual countries. There is now a much more complete selection of games from the Rapid and I'm up to date on the team event also.

10) Russian Cup Final 2010

There was just one further game to that reported last week. Zaven Andriasian won the event after defeating Artyom Timofeev in the second game of the final and so took the title. The women's final had already been won by Irina Turova who beat Baira Kovanova in the final.

11) Israeli Championships 2010

The Championships of Israel took place 8th Nov - Thu 18th Nov 2010. Vitali Golod took clear first place with 7.5/9 in this 9 round swiss. Masha Klinova won a bizarrely constructed women's event (5 player single round robin tournament to eliminate ONE player and then a single round robin with points from both added together is the best understanding I could manage of a format that was unnecessarily complicated). Klinova won the event easily with 6/7.

19) First Saturday November 2010

The First Saturday tournaments for November took place 6th-17th November 2010. There is an official press release.

U14 achieved his 2nd IM norm at First Saturday Budapest, 2010 November event

After three years since he became a candidate, Mikhail Al Antipov (Russia) achieved his IM norm at the age of 13 by having 8.5 point from 11 rounds at First Saturday International Tournament. From three continents, altogether 42 players of 13 countries (England, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, United States, Vietnam), including 14 titles holders, came to take part in Hungary's most famous chess tournament.

First Saturday is an international tournament series, organized every month (except January) since 1991. During its two decades, lots of further well-known players participated, including Sofia Polgar, Gergely Antal, Magnus Carlsen and Peter Leko. The key of its success is the integration of professional chess players from all over the world and the helpful support that one can feel from the organizer IO Laszlo Nagy and his excellent team of arbiters. Being in the middle of the vibrant city of Budapest, First Saturday provides a great opportunity for players to get relexed between rounds and for accompanists to get familiar with famous historical and cultural heritage of Hungary.

Winners of different groups:

IM V. Saravanan (IND) gained the first place of the GM group with 6.5 points out of 10, having a higher TPR than 2500, which helped him finally ranked before 3 GMs.

IM SARAVANAN, (IND)

With his new norm, CM Mikhail Al. Antipov (RUS) achieved a total performance of 2487 and won the IM group ahead of eight international title holders.

ANTIPOV, Mikhail (RUS), 2nd IM norm.

In the groups of non-title holders, 27 participants competed against each other from non-rated till candidate master level. More info with the results of groups, photos and games are available at the tournament website: www.firstsaturday.hu which is updated daily.

The next GM-IM-ELO rating event will be from 4th until 15th December in the Hungarian chess federation, from 2011 5th of February on in the the HOTEL MEDOSZ.

21) Metropolitan Inv IM

Jack Peters reports: There is a new club in downtown Los Angeles called Metropolitan Chess. It's first international tournament, held Nov. 12-21, was a Category 4 event. No one achieved an IM norm. Top-seeded Enrico Sevillano won his final five games, including a last-round victory over tournament leader Zhanibek Amanov, to take first prize. Title tournaments are rare in California, but club founder Michael Belcher plans to reverse that trend with several in 2011, including some that will offer opportunities for GM norms. Games should follow next week. Website: metrochessla.com

30) Larry Evans dies at the age of 78

Larry Melvyn Evans, born March 23, 1932 in Manhattan, New York, died Washoe Hospital in Reno, Nevada, 15th November 2010, following an operation has died at the age of 78. Larry Evans was in the first generation of US chess players to emerge after the second world war coming from the vibrant New York Chess scene. His most important chess results were in the United States or in Olympiads He was best known for his writing and his relationship with Bobby Fischer.

Larry Evans won the US Championships 5 times starting in 1951 ahead of Sammy Reshevsky, 1961, 1962, 1968 and 1980 (shared with Larry Christiansen and Walter Browne although Christiansen won a playoff later). He also had two 2nd placed finishes behind Fischer in 1963-4 (Fischer's 100%) and 1966.

He played for the US 8 times at the Olympiads (Debut 1950 where he earned a Gold Medal for his individual performance on board 6, until, with nice symmetry, Haifa 1976, where he appeared for the final time but was part of the US team that took Gold). He earned the GM title in 1957. He appeared only once in an Interzonal, in Amsterdam 1964 where he finished a disappointing 14th.

It is for his journalism he is best known, writing many books (including editing the 10th edition of MCO) and newspaper articles for mostly US newspapers in syndication. Although some of his writing has been criticised he has at least two crowning achievements in my opinion. Personally the book "New Ideas in Chess" (1958) influenced me greatly as a teenager. Although Bobby Fischer's "My 60 Memorable Games" is rightly regarded as a major achievement for him there is little doubt that without Evans it would never have appeared. Evans compiled the analysis and faithfully conveyed the text in Fischer's voice.

He acted as a friend and mentor to Fischer serving as his second in the Candidates series that took Fischer to the title but not in the World Championship match in Reykjavik. He is also supposed to have introduced Fischer to some shady ladies from Argentina that led to Fischer's worst tournament result in Buenos Aires in 1960. This was also one of Evans' best international results finishing 4th. His other great result was 2nd= with Petrosian, behind Donner in Venice 1967.

He was a controversial figure in US Chess' horrible local politics. He will be sadly missed. http://main.uschess.org/content/view/10820/608/ is the US Chess Federation's announcement and this is Larry Evans Wikipedia Entry.

Table of Larry Evans' only Interzonal appearance.
