1) Introduction

My thanks to Alexander Prokhorov, Roland Wimmer, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Luc Cornet, Miklos Orso Adolivio Capece, Alexis Murillo Tsijli, Antonio Rosino, Arthur Brameld, Andras Bernei, Dave Clayton, Eric van Reem, Gujuan Tzu, Gunnar Bjornsson, Holger Lieske, Monique van de Griendt, Rohan Waithe and everyone else who helped with the issue.

An amazing week with Germany's win in the European Teams being both deserved and a shock. I'm sure that their players will remember and appreciate this win more than the favourites would have.

The Women's World Chess Championship started with a draw with challenger Humpy Koneru drawing with white against defending champion Hou Yifan. 17 year old Hou is clearly a special champion with the support of the Chinese Federation whereas Humpy Koneru has been at odds with the Indian Federation whose dictatorial ways were highlighted in a message today to the major websites. Players are being banned and thrown off the rating list for playing in a rival organisation's events. Something that is completely intolerable. By all means don't rate such events but players should be free to play in whatever events they like, this is a basic human right and if FIDE are removing players from their list in connivance with this it this needs to end immediately. World Champion Viswanathan Anand hasn't played for India for many years, he keeps quiet, but he seems to have no relationship with his Federation.

The Tal Memorial starts on Wednesday. This event will be one of the events of the year and could be very significant indeed in changing the ratings of players.

2) 18th European Team 2011

The European Team Championships can never have been as dramatic as they were in Porto Carras in 2011. Various teams looked like they might win it, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Bulgaria all led at one point or another. It was however the unfancied 10th seeds Germany that held their nerve to win their 7th match dispatching Armenia 2.5-1.5 for a fantastic result. Azerbaijan finished second after beating Romania. Hungary provided the final shock coming from nowhere to take bronze by beating Bulgaria 4-0. After a couple of hours play it didn't look like they would win any games but then things went their way in an astonishing turn around. This left Armenia in fourth, any normal win by Hungary would have given Armenia the bronze. Russia finished 5th in another disappointing performance.

5) Max Euwe Memorial

The Max Euwe Memorial has two double round robin fields of four players. There are lectures and simuls all honouring former World Chess Champion and FIDE President Max Euwe who died 30 years ago this month. Round 1 was on Monday 14th November.

13) Costa Rica Championships 2011

Alexis Murillo Tsijli reports that "IM Bernal Gonzalez Acosta won the Costa Rican Chess Championship 2011. This is the 12th national title for Gonzalez. The final match against IM Leonardo Valdes Romero finished 2 - 2, but in the regular tournament Sonnemborg Berger sistem was better for Gonzalez. The fourth and final game of the match achived a great audience in the oficial site of the tournament, live. Also, news papers and TV media were present all over the tournament. Chess journalist Leontxo Garcia from Spain was present in the third game of the match."

15) Venetian Autumn Chess Festival 2011

Antonio Rosino reports: "128 chessplayers competed in three tournaments during "Autunno Scacchistico Veneziano", organised together, from October 30 to November 1, by "Esteban Canal Chess Club" and by "Carlo Salvioli Chess Club2 of Venice.

The master Tournament (Rating > 2000) with 28 players, was won with 4,5 points on 5 games by the Italian Xia Jie, from Montebelluna: with this result he will obtain to became FIDE Master. Equal second arrived IM Kenny Solomon from South Africa and FM Sergej Gromovs from Latvia.

The Open A Tournament (56 players with rating between 1700 and 2000) was won with 5 points on 5 games by Andrea Bortolussi from Mestre; Lorenzo Pasqualetto from Venice obtained second place with 4,5; Francesco Gabassi from Udine and Davide Pozzobon from Treviso were third equal with 4 points.

The Open B Tournament (44 players with rating till 1700) was won by Loris Cancian from Pordenone with 4,5 points on 5 games."

Bundesliga 2011-12

The Schachbundesliga 2011-12 takes place 14th October 2011 - 15th April 2011. The German event is the world's premier national team competition 15 rounds with possible tie-breaks 27th-29th April 2012. There has been a slight change in format with the rather odd split round 9 being ended. Instead the event kicks off with a triple round 1-3 at one venue Muelheim Nord 14th - 16th October 2011. The main shock was Baden-Baden's round 2 loss to hosts Muelheim, just their second match defeat since 2006.

Rounds 4-5 on 19th-20th November 2011.
