1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Alexander Prokhorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Jose L. Vilela, Ralf Mulde, Sean Hewitt and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Magnus Carlsen again won the Tal Memorial after a thrilling final round. Fabiano Caruana was leading by half a point and only needed a draw to take the title. Caruana got caught out in the opening and in spite of Aronian's struggles with his own form he was defeated. After Radjabov drew with Hikaru Nakamura the winner of the game between Carlsen and Luke McShane would take the title. McShane had an excellent tournament after losses in the first two rounds but he went seriously wrong in time trouble and Carlsen won and took the title. The event contained a lot of fighting chess, quite a lot of time trouble and all viewable with commentary in Russian and English. I have to say the Russians now have shown us all how presentation of top class tournaments should look if money is practically no object. I for one have learned a lot from watching the players on video, nevermind the commentary, which in the case of this event the English one was by Ian Rogers and was both informative and instructive. Anatoly Karpov defeated Yasser Seirawan in the blitz portion of their match which somewhat surprised me as Karpov's clock handling has been poor for years and Yasser suddenly decided to join him and that alone I believe cost him the match. In fact live coverage of chess events in general has shown that almost anything is possible if you have an opponent who thinks he can make lots of moves in only seconds. I would also suggest Alexander Grischuk find time to watch the archive of his play in the Tal Memorial and watch himself dump about 2 points through incomprehensible clock handling. The Russian Championship Higher League is as usual pretty strong and Peter Svidler plays David Navara in Prague this week but we learned there will be no Kings tournament in Medias due to the economy. I can't be the only one who is thinking that the loss of a tournament might be the least of our worries as this economic crisis shows no sign of ending.

2) 7th Mikhail Tal Memorial 2012

Magnus Carlsen has again won the Tal Memorial after a dramatic final round. He outplayed Luke McShane who himself could have won the event if he had won this game and the other results had remained the same. McShane's solid opening allowed Carlsen to equalise quite easily and then he subsided in time trouble after missing the key move 21...a5 in his calculations. Fabiano Caruana misplayed a Gruenfeld sideline against Levon Aronian and was quickly in terrible difficulties on the board and the clock. Aronian started "playing rubbish" in his own words but won all the same. Hikaru Nakamura played a Sicilian sideline against Teimour Radjabov and this finished in a draw. Rajdabov admitted to lousy form and many discarded chances. Tomashevsky-Grischuk was a sort of Benoni where Tomashevsky had to hang tough to draw. Kramnik-Morozevich was a draw in a Semi-Slav ending where it looked like Kramnik was close to winning at one stage. Official final round 9 standings including tie-break: 1st Carlsen 5.5pts, 2nd Caruana 5, 3rd Radjabov 5, 4th Kramnik 4.5, 5th Morozevich 4.5, 6th Levon Aronian 4.5, 7th Grischuk 4.5, 8th Luke McShane 4, 9th Nakamura 4 and 10th Tomashevsky 3.5.

3) ch-RUS Higher League 2012

The Higher League of the Russian Championship is a qualifier for the main event later in the year. Takes place in Tyumen 16th-27th June 2012. Dmitry Jakovenko and Ian Nepomniachtchi are the stars. Live coverage of the games, it's a bit tricky to produce standings currently as they're in Russian. Daniil Dubov started with 3/3, early days yet.

4) Karpov-Seirawan Match 2012

Former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov made his first trip to Saint Louis, the home of the US Chess Championship, to play an exhibition match against Yasser Seirawan. 2 classical time control games on Sunday and Monday (both games drawn), 2 rapid games on Tuesday (both draw) were followed by 10 blitz games on Wednesday. Karpov won the match as he won the blitz 6-4 with Seirawan losing three games in a row after the half time break mostly getting into time trouble he avoided elsewhere in the match. Karpov and Seirawan were interviewed afterwards.

The 47th Capablanca Memorial took place in Havana, Cuba 4th-14th May 2012. The Elite Group saw the return of 5 time winner (2005-7, 2010-11) and defending champion Vassily Ivanchuk and he won for the 6th time in a row with 6.5/10 by a point from Ian Nepomniachtchi who went down in flames in the final round trying to catch Ivanchuk and was defeated by Leinier Dominguez Perez who caught him on 5.5 points. Yuri Gonzalez Vidal won the Premier group. Final two rounds now available.
