1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Valery Maes, Esteve Ribalta Bertran, John Donaldson, Brian Morris and everyone else who helped with this issue.

This has been a busy week for chess. The 5th Final Masters finished the Sao Paulo half which has seen a lot of battling chess with Fabiano Caruana well in the lead. He survived a lost position against Levon Aronian and now looks strong favourite when play resumes in Bilbao. The London Grand Prix is heading towards a conclusion with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov leading but with Alexander Grischuk, Veselin Topalov and Boris Gelfand still well in contention half a point back. The Karpov tournament in Poikovsky is also strong with some interesting play so far.Humpy Koneru just edged out Anna Muzychuk to win the Women's Grand Prix in Ankara. Plenty to get ones teeth into.

This has been a sad week for me with the news of two deaths in the chess world coming as a shock. The Yorkshire and Bradford league has seen the passing of Keith Trobridge at the age of only 59. He was the captain of my team for a long time and a rival playing for Shipley. He will be greatly missed. Then I learned of the death of Sinisa Joksic one of the oldest friends to myself and TWIC magazine. Sinisa was a player, organiser and chess enthusiast who has sent news since the earliest days of TWIC. I will miss his passionate emails on the game and news a great deal.

A reminder that TWIC has now moved to http://www.theweekinchess.com and will continue on. I will be looking for subscriptions and advertising to help support the magazine once I have settled in there. Also the magazine will no longer be available for download using the ChessBase automatic download, you'll have to visit the TWIC website. Also this news section will not be included in the cbv version of the magazine. This text never worked properly and in fact was the source of corruption of some databases.

2) 5th Sao Paulo/Bilbao Final Masters

The 5th Final Masters have started in Sao Paulo, there were 5 rounds before a transfer to Bilbao. Fabiano Caruana survived a lost position against Levon Aronian to maintain a big lead going into the second half.
