1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Van de Wynkele, Steve Stahl, Eirik T. Gullaksen, Nelson Alvarez Villar, Adolivio Capece, Jan Mazuch, Gunnar Bjornsson, Antonio Rosino, Marat Makarov and everyone else who helped with this issue.

Anatoly Karpov pulled off a surprise victory defeating Vassily Ivanchuk in a tournament named after himself in a blitz playoff. Karpov was pretty much forced out of standard chess when his lack of opening preparation combined with terrible time trouble led to very bad results. This result alongside his win against Yasser Seirawan in St Louis shows Karpov still has some of his considerable ability left. Etienne Bacrot won the Corsica Masters around the same time. Dmitry Andreikin beat Ian Nepomniachtchi 3.5-2.5 in a friendly match in Moscow. The strong Chigorin Memorial was won by Alexander Areshchenko on tie-break from Bartosz Socko.There has been a huge amount of new chess this week in team events throughout Europe including yet another Spanish Team tournament which started today. Finally there is good news with the announcement of strong fields for the Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee in January, Carlsen, Aronian, Anand, Caruana, Karjakin, Nakamura etc. Plenty of new chess to look at.

2) Trophee Anatoly Karpov 2012

The Trophee Anatoly Karpov took place 26th November to 3rd November 2012. Anatoly Karpov won his own event after a long blitz match against Vassily Ivanchuk of 6 games where the latter lost on time in the final game. There two rapid games in the final had earlier been drawn. There was an open alongside won by Yannick Pelletier but I couldn't find a game file in spite of the fact that some were broadcast.

The Bundesliga first weekend took place 20th to 21st October 2012. Favourites OSG Baden-Baden started with two wins. The main story is that Falko Bindrich was accused of cheating by using his mobile phone during the game during frequent visits to the toilet during a game against Sebastian Siebrecht. He refused to show the contents of the phone and so he and his team were defaulted. There is also an appeal about his round 1 game the day before when he beat Pavel Tregubov.
