1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Bill Townsend, Christophe Philippe, John Saunders, Kenneth Regan, Miklos Orso, Ventzislav Inkiov, Tony Ficzere, Arthur Brameld and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The FIDE Candidates tournament starts in London on Friday. Magnus Carlsen starts as favourite but there are no weak players in the field and things could get very tense. This week saw the conclusion of a number of teams events, the FIDE Women's Teams, Varsity Match and Nigel Short in Tehran amongst other tournaments. The quiet before the storm.

3) Nancy GP Rapid 2013

The 11th Meurthe and Moselle Festival in Nancy. France took place 9th to 10th March 2013. Part of the French rapid Grand-Prix 2013. Vladislav Tkachiev beat Vladimir Dobrov 1.5 to 0.5 in the final of the knock-out on Sunday. It was Dobrov who created the sensation beating Bacrot, Pelletier and Vachier on the way to the final.

The 131st Varsity Match between Oxford and Cambridge Universities took place in the RAC Club, Pall Mall, London. Cambridge won 4.5-3.5, drawing the final game on board five which the Cambridge would almost certainly have won had he played on. Cambridge have now won 58 matches to Oxford's 53, with 20 matches drawn. (News John Saunders who provided the correct table of results I managed to find last years at first) Games and results below.

23) U.S. Amateur Team East 2013

Over the long holiday weekend of Feb. 16-18, the U.S. Amateur Team tournaments were held in various parts of the United States. The largest of the four tournaments by far is Team East, held in Parsippany, NJ, which is regularly one of the largest chess team tournaments in the world. This year 1,209 players competed in 281 four-player teams, down a little from last year's record-breaking total.

Top team this year was Princeton University A which was originally seeded 19th with an average team rating of 2187, but finished with the only perfect 6-0 score. The team members were, in rating order: FM Michael Lee, Andrew Ng, Dyland Xue, Leo Kang and Patrick Thompson. In the final round they faced "Knightmare 3" the only other team with 5-0, and defeated them 3-1.

The Amateur Team tournaments are an annual event, with the "Amateur" coming from the fact that the average team rating must be below 2,200 USCF. However, within that limitation almost anything is permissible, and several teams had titled players manning their top boards. Among the notables present were former U.S. Champions GM Joel Benjamin, GM Larry Christiansen and GM Arthur Busguier. Also playing were GM Giorgi Kacheishvili, GM Larry Kaufman, GM Michael Rohde, IM Dean Ippolito, and IM Jay Bonin.

The tournament was organized and directed by Steve Doyle and his team for the New Jersey State Chess Federation.

The Chinese league was a marathon event over 22 rounds. Rounds: Beijing 28th Apr - May 1st, Taizhou 27th-29th June, Shanghai 11th-13th July (turned out to be Tianjin), Shenzhen 14th-17th Sept, Hangzhou 6th-9th October and finally Danzhou 21st-24th Dec 2012.
