Brighton Masters 2011 (9)
Yang Fan Zhou scores 9/9 in Brighton
IM Malcolm Pein - Wednesday 2nd March 2011
100& scores are very rare so when Yang Fan Zhou scored 9/9 in an event where he was third seed and seeking norms is a pretty special result. Malcolm Pein reports.
Yang Fan Zhou confirmed his growing promise with an incredible result at the e2e4 Brighton Masters closed tournament at the weekend. The Croydon schoolboy scored a perfect 9/9, defeating three titled players; GMs Alexander Cherniaev of Russia and Keith Arkell, and IM Jack Rudd. Yang Fan's result was more than good enough for his second IM norm and he will surely achieve his third soon and secure the title.
The tournament winner defeated endgame specialist Keith Arkell, in the endgame, but his best game was a crushing win over the Russian who had offered a draw when Yang Fan still needed 1/3 for the IM result.
Congratulations again to e2e4.org.uk for staging a tournament in a fine venue, the Barcelo Old Ship Hotel, with good playing conditions.
8.Qa4 seems bad: 8.Qb3 Bxg2 9.Bxd5 Bxd5 10.Qxb7 Nxd4 11.Qa6 Nc2+ 12.Ke2 Nxa1 seems nice for Black; 8.Qxf3 Qxf3 9.Nxf3 cxd4 10.Nxd4 gives White some small chances for an edge but his bishop pair are largely balanced by the weak pawn on d4 after 10...Nxd4 11.cxd4 a6.

Black doesn't play this well but the decisive blow is cute, Black's bishop is trapped as 18...Bxh6 19.Nc4 discovers an attack from the undeveloped bishop on c1.
