1) Introduction

My thanks to Jan Muzach, Laszlo Nagy, John Fernandez, Vlad Barsi, Boris Schipkov, Gastón Arévalo, David Avron, Zenon Franco, Michelangelo Bussacchini, Dan Östergaard, Steve Laios, Lanfranco Bombelli, Lionel Frost, Sinisa Drazic, Hugh Brodie, Argiris Kotsis, Korpics Zsolt, Bas van Riel, Leontxo Garcia, Eugeny Atarov and all those who helped with this issue.

After a period of negotiation Ruslan Ponomariov will play at Linares. Whilst the words were about respect and contractual obligations I'm not that convinced. Given the agreement that was reached after the organisers paid Ponomariov extra money because of his responsibilities as FIDE World Champion (its anticipated this money will be used for hiring seconds) it looks like hard bargaining from both sides. This event will now be Ponomariov's first SuperGM tournament. His two meetings with Garry Kasparov will be of particular interest. News too of another great event in May with Astana attracting Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand in their six man field.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Aeroflot Open 2002

The Aeroflot Open 2002 took place in Moscow 4th-11th February 2002. Five players, Gregory Kaidanov, Alexander Grischuk, Aleksej Aleksandrov, Alexander Shabalov and Vadim Milov finished on 6.5/9. The website was unclear on who took first place on tie-break, I understand it was Gregory Kaidanov (although in some places the website implies Alexander Grischuk). Actually it reveals how silly these tie-break systems are. The event was very strong, top seed Ilia Smirin finished in 33rd place with 5/9. Van Wely, Sergei Shipov and Valerij Filippov only finished on 50%.

4) Linares and Astana 2002

The next major event in the calendar is the Linares 2002. This will be a seven player double round robin with Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Michael Adams, Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexei Shirov, Francisco Vallejo Pons and FIDE Champion Ruslan Ponomariov. There was a dispute between Ruslan Ponomariov and the organisers. The mayor of Linares, Juan Fernandez and some of Ponomariov's representatives eventually reached a two year agreement on Friday 8th in Moscow which will mean Ponomariov will play the event in 2002 and 2003. Linares will take place 22nd February - 10th March 2002. There will be on the spot photo reports from John Henderson.

Fantasy Chess is Back! you can predict the results at Fantasy Chess. http://play.at/fantasychess.

Leontxo Garcia of El Pais reports that there will be a tournament in Astana (Kazakstan) at the end of May. The players will be Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Michael Adams, Veselin Topalov and Darmen Sadvakasov.

7) Bermuda Open

The Bermuda tournament took place at the Fairmont Southampton Princess Hotel 1st-3rd February 2002. Leading Final Standings: 1-3. IM Emanuel Berg, IM Florian Handke, GM Bojan Vuckovic (Berg won the playoff round robin 2-0, taking title and trophy.) 4-7. GM Pawel Blehm, IM Gregory Shahade, GM Andrew Soltis, IM Eugene Perelshteyn.

A note on the final games. There was a 4 player Round Robin for the Top Amateur title between Asuka Nakamura, Dore Sheppard, Jerry Simon and Roger Patterson. They were splitting the free airfare + room for the 2003 event. Nakamura and Sheppard ended up at 2/3, and had another playoff. Nakamura won 2-0 and won the title. In the Open section there was a 3 way tie for first. The winner gets the name on the Trophy and the airfare + room for the 2003 event. It was set up to be a round robin with 3 players. Berg won the first game against Handke, and then the second game against Vuckovic, so the final game Vuckovic-Handke was unplayed and unnecessary, so Berg won the trophy and the trip for 2003.

11) CMA Futurity

Hugh Brodie reports on the "CMA Futurity" that took place January 23rd - February 1st 2002). The "CMA Futurity", organized in Montreal by the Chess and Math Association, was won by local IM Jean Hebert. The highest rated player, GM Vladimir Lazarev (RUS) finished half a point behine. The event was organized to give younger players a chance to play titled players, and try to earn a norm of their own. Canada's newest IM, 13-year old Mark Bluvshtein, had an excellent third-place performance. Two other young players - Thomas Roussel-Roozmon, and Igor Divljan - also had respectable scores (Igor beat Lazarev!).

FICS 10th ICS Anniversary

Michael More, of the University of Utah, and Richard Nash recognized the potential of an Internet Chess Server and programmed it's first version. The official opening date of the ICS was January 15, 1992. John Chanak, William Kish, and Aaron Putnam moved the server to a host machine at Carnegie Mellon University in the fall of 1992, and took over it's operation. From that original ICS has sprung FICS, the Free Internet Chess Server which now has over 100,000 registered users. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this birth, FICS will organize on his server a big event, with prizes. The main event will be a 5 0 torney, reserved to title players, with a total prize of 500 $ For this event, and for all the other event, partecipation is free. For information, you can contact frengo(*), at the address frengo@freechess.org In particular, titled players willing to take part to the main event, should contact me as soon as possible.
