1) Introduction

My thanks to Vladimir Dvorkovich, Ajay Gupta, Vincenzo Soretti, Kaspars Migla, Davide Cortese, Eugeny Atarov, JM Hantsch, Andreas Steger, John Hillery, Toni Ayza, Davide Cortese, Franz Jittenmeier, Eduard Piacun, René Olthof, John Fernandez, Guenter Schuhmacher, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Julio Alberto González and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The twists and turns of World Championship chess continued this week when Ponomariov did not sign a contract to play Kasparov in their FIDE match. I don't know his reasons but on the surface the points were minor and certainly not worth losing the opportunity of playing Kasparov. No doubt we'll hear what he has to say sometime soon. I hope he doesn't come to regret it. The sooner we get a single champion and a fixed championships cycle the better but I'm not confident of seeing it any time soon.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Final FIDE deadline falls

FIDE have cancelled the Kasparov vs. Ponomariov match. Instead it has been proposed there will be a knockout in December 2003. The winner will play Kasparov and the winner of that will play Leko - Kramnik. Ponomariov refused to sign the contract as presented to him by FIDE and after several deadlines passed FIDE decided to exclude him. The clauses in question seemed very minor to me.

3) Panamerican Continental Championships

The Panamerican Continental Championships took place in 16th-30th August 2003 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 11 round Swiss has an $11,000 first prize. The 7 who qualified for the next FIDE Championships were Lazaro Bruzon, Alexander Goldin, Ivan Morovic Fernandez, Hikaru Nakamura, Alexander Onischuk, Yuri Shulman and Giovanni Vescovi (Charbonneau, Gulko, Kaidanov and Shabalov were already qualified). Alexander Goldin and Giovanni Vescovi won with 8.5/11. Julio Granda Zuniga didn't play the last round and finished on a disappointing 5.5/11. My thanks to Julio Alberto González.

17) Los Angeles International

John Hillery reports: The Los Angeles International, a 10-player, Category X tournament which took place from August 18 though 26 at the California Chess Club, ended in a tie between GMs Leonid Yudasin and Julio Becerra, both with 6½-2½. The undefeated Yudasin drew quickly in the last round with tournament organizer IM Varuzhan Akobian, but Becerra had to battle to the last minutes of sudden death to wrest the full point from IM Melikset Khachiyan, in a crowd-pleasing slugfest. Other notable results include IM Enrico Sevillano's 6-3, good for a GM norm, and Armen Ambartsoumian, who earned his third IM norm with 4½. John Hillery directed.
