Almost all the groups for Wijk aan Zee 2010 have been decided. The A-Group will see World Champion Viswanathan Anand, Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Vladimir Kramnik and Alexander Grischuk as top seeds. The B-Group is the strongest in the tournaments history. The C-Group is also very interesting with Mark Bluvshtein being the first Canadian invitation to an event such as this I can remember (Kevin Spraggett played the A-Tournament in 1985). There are two places still available in this tournament and these will be qualifiers from the Cultural Village tournament in November. Below is a rough translation of the official press release.

The 73rd Tata Steel tournament will have 5 players from the top 10 in the World. They are Magnus Carlsen (1), Viswanathan Anand (3), Levon Aronian (4), Vladimir Kramnik (5) and Alexander Grischuk (7). The participants in the main group has five newcomers, namely 16-year-old Anish Giri from Rijswijk, Erwin L'Ami from Woerden, the reigning European champion Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia), the Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (youth world champion in 2009/2010) and the Chinese player Wang Hao.

The field is a nice mix of world's elite, and young talent debutants. Five of the fourteen players are 21 or younger. World Champion Anand (41 January 2011) is the oldest participant. With an average rating of 2736 the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2011 approaches the in strength the anniversary tournament in 2008 (then with an average rating of 2740).

The champion of the Tata Steel Group B Chess Tournament will win the strongest B event in the history in Wijk aan Zee. The tournament has the coveted prize of qualification for the A group in 2012 and this has attracted rather more world class players to the tournament than might be expected. No fewer than three of the fourteen players have a rating of over 2700, players of Candidates Class. With an average rating of 2657, the B group has for the first time in its history achieved Category 17 status.

The Grandmaster group C has 12 of the 14 players decided. The remaining two places go to the winner of the Traditional Cultural Village Tournament (15th-24th November 2010 in Wijk aan Zee) and the best Dutchman in the same tournament.

The 73rd Tata Steel Chess Tournament takes place 14th-30th January 2011 in the sports hall of De Moriaan in Wijk aan Zee. Admission is free to the public.
