Giri and Carlsen join the leaders after 6 rounds of the Tata Steel Masters

Anish Giri and Magnus Carlsen joined Ding Liren and Ian Nepomniachtchi in the lead on 4 points after they both won in the sixth round of the Tata Steel Masters.

Carlsen won a difficult endgame late on against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Although equal the position was very unbalanced and it seems 44...h5? (44...e3) was the losing move. Jan-Krzysztof played the rare 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. g3!? against Giri. Duda's 13.0-0?! followed by 14.Nd5? left Giri with a winning position which he converted easily enough even though it took 44 moves. Jorden van Foreest won a bottom of the table battle against Vladimir Fedoseev where there were shocking swings in evaluation during the game. Richard Rapport and Vladimir Kramnik drew the final game to finish, they both were winning at one stage or another too. The remaining games were less interesting, Ding Liren tried for a long time against Teimour Radjabov but Anand-Nepomniachtchi and Vidit-Shankland were fairly short.
