Alireza Firouzja beat Parham Maghsoodloo in the second round of the Tata Steel Masters and ended up being the only player on 100% after two rounds. It looked to me like Maghsoodloo forgot his theory and was then just lost. There were wins for Gukesh and Max Warmerdam too as the event continues to excite. Praggnanandhaa drew against Abdusattorov, Ding drew against Donchenko, Giri drew against Vidit and the Nepomniachtchi against Ju Wenjun game was the last to finish, also in a draw.

Round 2 Standings: 1st Firouzja 2pts 2nd-4th Gukesh, Giri, Nepomniachtchi 1.5pts 5th-10th Warmerdam, Vidit, Praggnanandhaa, Abdusattorov, Wei Yi, Ding Liren 1pt 11th-13th Ju Wenjun. Donchenko, Maghsoodloo 0.5pts 14th Van Foreest 0pts

Round 3 pairings Monday 15th Jan 1pm GMT: Warmerdam-Firouzja, Ju Wenjun-Van Foreest, Vidit-Nepomniachtchi, Donchenko-Giri, Gukesh-Ding Liren, Praggnanandhaa-Wei Yi, Maghsoodloo-Abdusattorov.

Round 2 Summary

Alireza Firouzja won for a second time beating Parham Maghsoodloo in a Berlin. It looks to me like Maghsoodloo forgot his preparation as they followed Niclas Huschenbeth vs David Navara from the Isle of Man last year until Maghsoodloo's new 18...Be6? which looks to be just losing 18...c6 as played in the stem game looks the only move. Firouzja proceeded to have a lot of fun and win in 43 moves.

Gukesh won a strange Giuoco Piano as black against Wei Yi. The players both embraced complications and Wei Yi rather overdid it. The key sequence was 20.Ne3?! (a few moves are better including 20.Qc2) h5?! (20...Bxe4 is playable and good) 21.c4 (21.Bd3) exd4 (21...c6) 22.Nd5?! (22.Nxd4 is about equal) Qd8 23.Nxd4? (23.Nxe7 is roughly equal) 23...Bc5! 24.Nb3 Ba3 25.Nxc7? a tactic that doesn't work and Gukesh mopped up.

Max Warmerdam won as black against Jorden van Foreest in a fighting and sharp London System. 19.e5?! (Be3) was dubious from Van Foreest and the follow up 20.Bxe6?! (20.Rhe1) was also not best. 22.Bh6? (22.Rd8) was probably the decisive error and it was certainly as good as over only a few moves later.

Praggnanandhaa equalised out of the opening as black against Nodirbek Abdusattorov Catalan and the game was drawn in 47 moves. Anish Giri didn't get much against Santosh Vidit and they drew in 35 moves. Ding Liren got little or nothing against Alexander Donchenko solid King's Indian structure, Ian Nepomniachtchi didn't get much out of the opening against Ju Wenjun and gave up a pawn for complications in the endgame but the position remained stubbornly level and the game was drawn in 80 moves.
