Magnus Carlsen started with a win against Yannick Pelletier with black. He got a big advantage going into a queen endgame but it did take him a little longer than expected to exploit this. The other games were drawn although not without interest. Round 2 1pm UK time Tuesday 19th July. Vachier-Lagrave-Morozevich, Carlsen-Shirov, Caruana-Pelletier.

Magnus Carlsen beat local player Yannick Pelletier with black in the first game of the 44th Biel Chess Festival. Sponsors ACCENTUS allowed the organisers to afford the participation of the World number one. Carlsen found his way around the complexities of a Gruenfeld to keep the extra pawn his opponent sacrificed in the opening. In spite of having an exposed king in a major piece ending Carlsen quickly obtained a winning endgame. At this point his play was not the best and eventually he had to use some precision to get the full point.

Fabiano Caruana seemed to gain the upper hand in the middlegame against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, but then things became quite unclear before the players agreed a draw on move 45.

Alexei Shirov and Alexander Morozevich played a very interesting Classical French Defence which ended in repetition on move 24.

Three points for a win, 1 for a draw is in use.
