Alexander Grischuk took an early lead in the Petrosian Memorial in Moscow after defeating Ernesto Inarkiev. It all started so innocuously from Grischuk but his move order led to a quick and large advantage. I rather think there will be no future GM takers for Inarkiev's position after 12 moves. Maybe Michael Adams' choice of 5...a6 is the most accurate. After 17 moves Grischuk had a stable edge and after 20...f6 he was winning. Vladimir Kramnik played a variation of the Queen's Gambit championed by Nigel Short. He had compensation for a broken pawn structure and a draw always looked the likeliest result. Alexander Morozevich played the O'Kelly Variation (2...a6) of the Sicilian against Peter Leko and was also never in serious trouble. Levon Aronian got to play against a standard isolated pawn position vs Boris Gelfand. If there was an advantage to be had in the endgame Aronian didn't show it and the game was drawn. All games in the PGN with notes. Gelfand had an interesting sacrificial possibility in his game pointed out by Aronian.

Round 1 Standings: 1 Grischuk 1pts 2-7 Aronian, Kramnik, Leko, Gelfand, Ding Liren, Morozevich 0.5pts 8 Inarkiev 0pts
