Magnus Carlsen was back in joint first place catching Teimour Radjabov after 6 rounds of the Vugar Gashimov Memorial. Carlsen beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in a highly unusual variation of the 4,Qc2 Nimzo that to start followed a Capablanca-Nimzowitch game 1929. Then on move 8 Mamedyarov the game into a sort of Semi-Slav style battle. Carlsen probably didn't enjoy this too much but Mamedyarov couldn't make the structure work and his position collapsed leading to a quick loss in only 27 moves. The remaining games were drawn.

Round 6 Standings: Radjabov, Carlsen, 3.5pts/6, Caruana, Karjakin, Nakamura 3pts, Mamedyarov 2pts

Round 7 Sunday 27th April: Radjabov-Mamedyarov, Karjakin-Caruana, Nakamura-Carlsen.
